What do I really need done??? The timing belt issue...

New user here, first post.

2007 TL 3.2
103k miles

What do I really done? I've been in a Honda family for 20yrs and we have always changed the timing belt / water pump on all (7!) our Accords / Civics at the 80-100k mark.

I'm the 1st Acura of the bunch, and while I know my engine shares much with the reg 3.0 V6 Accord, it appears the "big service" is more in-depth (and costly) than the Hondas.

I've been quoted between $1100-$1300 at two Acura dealers for the following:

Timing belt
Tensioner
Belts
Water pump
Coolant
Spark plugs

Is this all needed? I love this car and will drive forever, so I do want to maintain accordingly.

I've heard valve adjustment as well, could be another $300+.

Help me out here!

Should/could a Honda dealer do the service just as well and cheaper???

THANKS TO ALL!

Sophia- welcome to the forums.

Take a look at this thread: https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-2004-2008-93/122-diy-105k-service-timing-belt-water-pump-spark-plugs-thermostat-%2Apics%2A-784622/

and yes, a Honda dealer can do it.

Where do you live? Depending on your answer, maybe some of our members can give you suggestions on where to take it.

Depends on what services you have done prior to this. I myself am a honda technician. Yes the timing belt is due every 90,000 miles or every 7 years. Along with the timing belt you replace all the other key components. If you haven't already done so replace the transmission service, brake fluid flush, replace the spark plugs, and also do the valve cover adjustments. If i was around nc i would totally do it for you for free and get you the parts very cheap.

Illest...

Good to know a Honda dealer will be able to do. You're assuming any Honda technician is just as well-versed on the engine? All do respect, of course!

You said replace "other key components". Which of those that I listed would you have on your list? Would you do the spark plugs and valve adjustment as well?

Thank you!

I called my local Acura dealer and got a detailed list of the service they were going to perform for ~$2400. I then called a local independent mechanic as well as my local Honda dealership who both quoted me just over $1000 for the same services. I opted for the Honda dealership over the independent since it made getting Honda parts easier.

Don't know if this helps or not, but this is what I had done in January of this year after buying my 2005 TL in December...

Spark Plugs.................. $265.64

Engine Coolant............. $144.04

Trans Fluid Drain / Fill... $89.39

Oil and Oil Filter Change... $21.12

Brake Fluid Drake and Refill... $143.40

the timing belt service is the same on ALL J series motors, doesnt matter if its an accord or TL, its not any more complicated because its an acura. heck, a 1998 V6 accord has almost the exact same procedure. (slight difference in tensioner thats it)

sophia sophia. it depends how much do you love your acura?

you can hold off on the spark plugs for the meanwhile
you can get up to 120k on the timing belt

the serpentine belt is good up to 120k too.
the coolant need to be replaced for sure.

my recommendations are to replace the timing belt water pump and tensior and worry about the spark plugs and serpentine belt later.

^^^^Correction: You're a Honda technician who obviously hasn't read the TL Service Manual.

Don't over pay for spark plugs. Dealer claims they are $25 apiece but you can get the NGK ones at auto zone for $10 apiece, I believe those are OEM for TLs. Also any mechanic should be able to put them in for 1/2 hour of labor. I found a local independent shop that put in a timing belt, serp belt, water pump, spark plugs, air filter, cabin filter, and flushed the cooling system for less than $700 parts and labor.

I found this deal that I was about to snag on eBay. It comes with these parts listed below for $315.95:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/251200881930?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p398 4.m1423.l2649

Timing Belt Honda 14400-RCA-A01
Idler Roller Pulley Koyo OEM 14550-RCA-A01
Tensioner Roller Pulley Koyo OEM 14510-RCA-A01
Water Pump & Gasket NPW Japan 19200-RDV-J01
Hydraulic Tensioner Aisin OEM 14520-RCA-A01
Front Camshaft Sewals x 2 Honda 91213-R70-A02
Front Crankshaft Seal Honda 91212-R70-A02

Or another that comes with the Serpentine Drive Belt and an Oil Filter for $354.95:

I am either going to find a local shop to do it or call Acura or Honda and see how much it would cost for them to do it. Do you guys think this is a good deal? I definitely do not have anything close to $2k for this type of service. I already did the spark plugs and maybe going to wait on the Valve Adjustment.

I wouldn't touch the cam/crank seals unless they are leaking...I bought the gates kits at Rock Auto last year and have no regrets!

Hey Sophia! Welcome to the site. I own an '04 acura TL, at about 106k miles, the timing belt needed to be replaced. I bought the car used at 80k miles and didn't replace the timing belt at that time- since the engine, etc seemed to be running fine. I did call an Acura dealership here in Portland, OR- they quoted me around 1k... then I called other places and found an independent mechanic who has his own business. He provided all the services w/ new parts for under $500. Warranty included. My car is still running great, no noises, etc- and it's been about 3-4 months since the change. I hope you find a good deal, but an honest mechanic/ business!

In the Atlanta area, honda dealerships offer timing belt specials. I came upon a flyer and gave my local acura dealer and a call and they weren't hesitant to beat Honda. Honda did not include the tensioner but Acura included it for me. Got it all done for 980 bucks out the door.

Pretty sure Honda NC dealers offer a similar timing belt special!

I Agree with someone else has stated about just doing the tbelt and water pump and spark plugs later! I believe the rec time and mileage interval for the tbelt service is 105k or 7 years. if the cam seals are not leaking dont worry about it! another thing you probably should have had them check was the oil pump. they start to leak when u get over the 120k mark most of them! That would have been easily accessible when doing the tbelt. You have to take the tbelt off to get to the pump anyways!

My Acura dealer lets me buy my own parts and he will install them as long as they are Acura parts. hansel Acura has a deal on timing kit included belts, tensioner and waterpump for about $300. He will give you 25% off all parts. That's a way to cut down on the costs.

Do you always offer to do major mechanical work, absolutely free for random women on the Internet?
