The e36 M3 is hard to beat, IMO the E46 doesn't in handling. The M3 did so many things good. Power/torque, steering, handling, comfort all were top notch. I like the TL more for its comfort and general competency than its raw handling/performance capability.
I almost bought another 1999 E36 M3 4 door with 47k miles instead of the TL but I just didn't want to deal with the potential maintenance costs and the fact that it was already 5 years old. The TL just made much more sense considering the type of driving I do. And it has a useable back seat.

My misfortune is that I owned car #1 new and car #2 (2yrs later) as my first 2 cars, they ruined my perception of cars forever.

1)1970 Judge GTO
2)1970 SS454
After those 2 monsters I have driven just cars

1977 Mustang (built my first engine!)
1987 F-150
1979 Capri RS (built the 302, very fast, zero brakes and handling)
1984 Mustang GT (built the 289 - not a typo, built suspension, ran like it was on rails, had to let it go when I moved to California)
1990 5.0 Mustang (built the 5.0, very fast, kept it for 12 years)
1998 Ford Contour (V-6, purgatory - but saving money was the right decision for my family. This car destroyed my love of Fords.)
2000 Honda Odyssey - My experience with this van put Honda/Acura at the top of my list when I looked for a new car.
2004 TL - out of purgatory

You must have a lot of time on your hands! It would be a long list - if I could remember them. No way I can remember the cars I have rented, borrowed, or test driven. I traveled three times in the last six weeks and I don't even remember what my rental cars were...and that's recent history!

Those are the cars I have owned and driven. Why the Dodge? Yes I admit, I was stupid and regret driving that car for the 2 years I owned it. Manuel Chrysler Dodge service techs should be hung. Awful service, terrible communication, just plain bad. The Accord is my current car. I love this thing. It still drives like the day I got it... well with some minor mods. On the list of cars driven... hmm....
