Are referring to a Passat? It does not come with a VR6. The optional V6 in the Passat is the same 5 valve V6 offered in the Audi A4. If this is the car you're talking about, it's a very nice car, though it is nearing the end of its production run and is due for a redesign. I think all scheduled maintenance is provided free throughout the 48 month warranty. It has a nice interior, materials are first rate, but The TL's interior is even nicer and offers significantly more technology and amenities. I don't think the Passat offers a navi option. I know a few people that drive Passats; they are all very happy with them.

I had a GLX VR6...
I loved my Jetta! It was one of the most fun cars I have ever owned.
The reason I still don't own the car is... After putting over $17,000 in repairs, I won a Lemon Law Hearing and was given almost the price of the car when new. That's how I got my first TL.
They are pieces of crap, if you buy one, you have been warned. I WILL NEVER BUY A VW PRODUCT AGAIN.

And Adam209, shut up!

I've had zero problems with my two GTIs. But I know I'm in the minority. Actually the reason I hate VW is the customer service and the dealer network. They think they're selling Porsches.

I'll jump on the reliability bandwagon. I had a Golf that went through multiple recalls. Annoying stuff like the wiper motor having to be replaced 3 times.
There is a article in today's WSJ on how European reliability is down so low that they're making Detroit look good.
Plus, VW as an organization has some issues right now, probably not the best time to be buying from them in any event.

Amen to your AMEN!!!
I currently have a GTI that I wish would dissapear. Sadly, no matter how hard I close my eyes it's still there.
God, please let it run for a few more months until I trade it in. PLEASE!!!!!

Check the new CR auto issue that others are posting about, regarding VW reliability. It appears to be the worst overall make. (Land Rover is pretty low also). In particular, the Jetta and Golf models are bad. The Passat is OK for a few years, and then drops. Or maybe they've actually improved the Passat and the newer ones will hold up better. I sure wouldn't be standing in line for a $90,000 VW Phaeton or a Tour-egg, without some history behind them.
It's really too bad, because VW has some nice driving cars, and great interiors for the price. From what I've heard, Mexican production of some VWs has really hurt them in reliability. I'm not sure of the current status of that.
Sister company Audi is a little better, although all of their products are still below average.

I recently traded a VW Jetta wagon with VR6 in on a TL. I was bascially forced to trade the VW due to the number of problems that I was having only after 40K miles. Reapir bills were mounting and I still had numerous things wrong. I finally gave up and got my TL. I was already drooling over the TL, this only made my decision easier. VW's quality and reapir pricing are horrible. This would be and was a no-brainer for me.

Alot of folks are sold on the German brand name and German engineering but bottomline: Japanese automakers BY FAR manufacture superior cars.

I've owned five VW/Audi products and two Honda automobiles.
My parents' Jetta (1999) is a piece of garbage. ABS system siezed (locking wheels), both front window regulators went bad (windows dropped into doors), solenoid valve went twice, transmission locked, sunroof failed twice, and oxygen sensor failed).
Funny thing is - they still love the car. Even with all the problems and having to replace each direction signal, taillamp, and headlight in 60,000 miles...

I had an 02 Passat that went through the coil pack dilemma that VW/AUDI had with their 1.8 T. The first one went out, and I had to tow my car to the dealership. I went about five rounds with them, because the Coil Pack was not an "official" recal quite yet, and they would not replace them. I blew three out of the four packs, with three seperate tows, and three seperate replacements. I modded the heck out of it and it was fast as hell, I would have handed any TL its own rear end, but the TL is definately the nicer car. NEVER A VW AGAIN
