That one changes color based on rpm, not vtec.

Not sure why you would want this but nothing on the TL is easy and just about every component has some input from the ECU so good luck.

I could see using it as a shift indicator maybe 500rpms before redline. I like the IS350's tach display color change.

^^^ no if you click on the youtube link and read the description of the video it does say that it turns red when vtec engages...i would want to do it just to have it...i personally think its cool and would add another "hitec" feature to the TL in an already high tech looking interior(minus tape deck)

Ya that would be easy to do actually I have read about this before. You need to add the red leds to the gauge of course then just run a relay on the vtec seloniod wire coming off the ecu that will activate them when VTEC kicks in. Pretty cool actually sounds like a project I might have fun with I love wiring project.

How can it come on in the video when the engine was not under load?

It's my understanding that vtec requires heavy throttle plus a certain rpm to engage.

You could make it tasteful but I disagree about uselessness I would find it very useful to have some kind of redline indication for shifting. Its soo easy for me to redline my 6spd and hit the red limit without even realizing it during spirited driving cause its so quiet.

That I agree with especially for the 6mt. My rpms climb so slow in my 5at that I can pretty much keep an eye on the tach pretty easy.

I meant load as in full throttle. Just spinning the tires in the air might put 5% load on the engine.

I thought VTEC was completely RPM dependent ?

You are correct, Vtec engages under these conditions.
Engine temp is at operating range my ls/vtec was 185 degrees
Oil pressure is good, 70-80lbs
Full throttle with engine load, it will never engage with wheels spinning.

The design in the video, has a controller that changes the color of the gauge's based on RPM. It has nothing to do with Vtec engaging. They just programmed the colors to come to a specific color at 4800-5500 rpms. If you know any programming language you could do this, typically assembly language would be the easiest and fastest.
