My intake makes a distinct change in intake sound when I hit 5k-ish rpms
I've assumed this to always be the vtec kicking in.

You can tell it kicked in when the other car already passed you.

Justin is right though, with the big cam on only the intake valves on the SOHC engines its hard to feel a difference. I can tell because it has decent torque and pulls strong to redline.

Anyone who has driven most American cars from the 80s knows what I'm talking about. Even when my turbo car was stock, power was great on the low end and then it hits a wall at 4,500rpm. I actually like how the TL is seamless, it means the engineers did a good job of picking the best crossover rpm.

For some reason I thought he was asking about a TSX, disregard my comment about 6000 RPMs

You need to put the car on dyno and observe then if your dyno chart look like this then you know when the Vtec is engage. LOL

Funny how people making fun of Vtec and doesn't know that most car out there these day having some kind of variable cam control, like one of the guy here in my local saying Vtec doesn't have any benefit for a motor. He driving the new 5.0 mustang then I point to his mustang and say sadly you just make a fool of yourself since the new 5.0 also having variable cam that control just like Vtec.

Agreed. Most are way more advanced than the TLs on off nature of vtec. Many cars have variable cam phasing and some additional lift with near infinite points of adjustment writhin its range. DOHC engines benefit from being able to advance and retard intake and exhaust cams separately for variable overlap and duration which can really help with emissions. Some don't even need an EGR system due to this. I've really got to get behind a computer soon so I can explain stuff more thoroughly.
