i believe 4800 RPM on the regular TL and TLS and 3000 on the S/C'ed ones

please consult your owners manual for details on how vtec works and whats going on inside the engine
The book also tells you the max speeds in each gear, how the sensors all work to operate the ABS and traction control systems-(something you may need after using vtec) and many more things you NEED to know!

Didnt get a book with the car?- here's the free link- click year then model
https://techinfo.honda.com/rjanisis/...01_OMANUAL.asp
pdf file opens- move cursor over the Index and click for contents list- go from there
Download- save- read online-whatever you like,
but reading up on the car will answer most questions, and give info you should have in your head

^if I summon all of your posts, 90% of them say the same thing about the manual... enough?

This is from the Honda Media Newsroom site:

When engine rpm reaches 4700 rpm (4950 rpm in the TL Type-S), the powertrain control module (PCM) electronically triggers the opening of an electric spool valve that routes pressurized oil to small pistons within the intake valve rocker arms. These pistons slide into position to lock together the three intake rocker arms in each cylinder which then follow a single high-lift, long-duration cam lobe. With the engine's intake valve lift and opening duration continuously adjusted to suit the engine speed, the TL benefits with a broad torque curve and superior peak power. Although similar in design, the two engines feature different cam profiles, with the TL Type-S having higher lift and longer duration.

Isn't vtec like any other valve electronic system. Like vvt or something like that? Is vtec one of the best variable valve lift and timing systems?

no probably 90 percent are about seafoam or deep creep.

When members stop asking basic things that are in the Owner book- and everyone should have read it for the amazing amount of knowledge therin.....
When it seems the book would have the answer for the poster- and others in the future, I post the free book link so you can have one too!
Sometimes I feel generous and give the acura registration site and phone number- maybe then recalls will be taken care of and the questions on that will slow....

Go ahead- Scoff at seafoam- no one who has tried it and done it correctly-- have ever complained- even doing it half right does a decent job~
Use Wynns brand or Honda's kits to do the same thing- or GM for 50 bucks- or have a shop use those same things and charge $150, while the rest of us DIY with foam
Fun with Foam !!!!!

Why is VTEC dropped to 3,000 on SC'd TL's?

That would annoy the hell out of me.

I always find 01tl4tl's post helpful. He is right, most the questions asked on this forum can be found in the manual. But alot of people, myself included, would rather ask a question here instead of researching the manual. Only time I really read it is when Im waiting in the car for somebody

I'm assuming SC is supercharged TLs. The VTEC is lowered because the SC is forcing more air into the motor, so the VTEC is engaged sooner to allow the extra air to get into the engine faster creating more power! If VTEC wasn't engaged sooner you would have all that air you didn't have before and it would have no place to go.

They are not all the same. The is simple VVT like what I believe Mazda and Toyota use that just advance or retard the timing to best fit driving conditions. Then there are systems like VTEC that change the lift and duration by using different cam lobes. i-VTEC will continuously alter intake cam timing to increase efficiency. Then there are even more andvanced systems that can continuously vary the lift and timing rather than just at a specific point like VTEC.

I'm not sure if you're capable of understanding.

On the TL, just the intake valves have vtec because of space limitations on the SOHC motor. Basic vtec is probably the lowest form of manipulation but effective. I'm honestly not sure if the TL can actually advance or retard cam timing or if it just switches to the "big" cam for the intakes.

With different manufacturers and DOHC motors, they can play with lift, duration, overlap, overall cam timing, and all 4 in a nearly infinate combination for power, emissions, mpg, octane requirement, etc. With this type of setup, the changeover is not really noticable since it is progressive and not all or nothing like basic vtec.

Honda does make the more "advanced" systems for the DOHC motors. If you're looking for pure power and getting down the dragstrip as fast as possible the old school vtec is just as good as the new variations.

Sorry for the vagueness, I'm not up to date with the new terminology.

Don't forget the variable length intake runners...
