Trying to squeeze blood from a rock?

How realistic (or un-realistic?) would an RWD conversion seem on the 04 TL? I'm no mechanic or car engineer, but I've heard of FWD to RWD swaps in the past. Does anyone have experience in this department or could shed some light on the subject? I'm sure there are plenty of adept engineers trolling, ahem, reading these forums.. (JK)

Thanks in advance for your participation.

It'd be cheaper to buy a new car.

Or, you could drive backwards.

there's no lump down the middle for drive train so you're doing a big redesign. there's no lump in the trunk to house the differential, more redesign. as JD2 stated, buy a new one.

Big redesign...

Keep in mind in addition to what Sherlock stated, the engine is transversely mounted (sideways) in the engine compartment. Connecting a driveshaft to it would most like require extensive modification to the engine and transmission. I am fairly certain that a different engine and transmission combination would have to be used. So as been stated before, it would be more cost effective to just buy another car if RWD is something that you really want. The G35 is a very nice car that would probably fit the bill nicely.

With enough money, I am sure someone could do a RWD conversion to the TL. I think, however, it would be a bad idea.

The only time I'd ever heard of the being done they moved the entire engine in to what was the trunk and converted the former engine compartment into the new trunk.

It's just not worth that much trouble to do that on a TL.

I second that. The G35 interior is not for me. Especially the center console with NAV.

The TL RWD project does sound too involving tho. Bummer.

I will consider driving backwards. Perhaps I can put in the new Mini Cooper tranny with 2 reverse gears. I'll go faster than 15mph..

You would be better off looking into the new Chrysuckler 300C. Prices the same with Navi, HFL, and Stability control. Plus you get 340hp RWD... not to mention it shuts down 4 of the cylinders when in cruise mode for efficiency. 17 mpg city and 25 highway... not bad for a V8 domestic.

I wouldn't buy one. I just like to test drive.

No stick. No clutch. No deal.

Also, it's uglier than Medusa on a bad hair day.

Exactly my reasoning, besides being a domestic. I have never bought an automatic vehicle and I'm not about to start. But I thought it is an interesting car coming from the domestic market. Chrysler is starting to benefit from the Benz line, it comes with a Benz diffy put the power down to the pavement. Luxury, elegance, and power.

But Chrysuckler, Dudge, Jip, and Plowmouth still suck in my opinion.

Hmm... I'd better get a hold of the new Mitsu EVO MR before they get their hands on it.

How about the new M5? Sweeeeeeeeeeeeet. 500 HP. V10. 8300 RPM redline. 4 doors. Quite a looker, too.

Although the M4 will have the old 400 HP V8.. Too bad Bimmers use that lame knob for NAVI control.

I tell you, stick the new RL engine into the TL and AWD and there will be no competition.
