AT Transmission Filter, is there one?

Contemplating power purging tranny fluid, but this may cause problems with tranny filter and doesn't clean the material or residue in the pan. I don't know if there is a tranny filter, the manual doesn't really say. If no filter, I will have them just power purge it and ask them to replace with Amsoil ATF. Or may just drain it myself, leave the pan alone and do the 3 times drain and fill with the amsoil.

There is no filter; only a magnetic end to the drain plug to capture mettalic parts. Also there is no pan...

Not exactly sure on the process of "power purge" but if that means pulling the tranny fliud feed to the radiator and doing a full drain...that would not work either since the TL tranny has its own fluid cooler and has no feed to the radiator.

Drain and refill a few times is the way to go (3 quarts each time) for a DIY (do a search I think 5 times should replace all the fluid)

How much do you have to drive the car, or just run it idle, between ATF fills?

You should drive it at least a couple of miles to warm up the new fluid and insure it is all circulated and mixed together.

My service manager told me recently that Acura does not recommend flushing the ATF system.

I am scheduled for the three flush procedure next Wednesday. It is a long story and I will post it after the procedure is done.

I didn't ask and he didn't tell. I didn't feel like I needed a flush so I just let it go.

Flushing the ATF using an external pump may cause the passages to clog with debris that otherwise will stay in the pan. It's impossible to replace all the ATF, but 3 drain and refill is the recommended method.

I believe, but might be wrong here, that a lot of Japanese auto transmissions only have internal, non-serviceable filters inside the tranny. To access it, you have to do a complete overhaul.

If the TL's ATX has an external heat exchanger (dunno for sure, I own a 6MT), installing serviceable external filter is possible and is a good way to ensure longer transmission life.
