Tranny problems?

I've been reading/hearing about the tranny problems for the older TLs. I have a new 05 and was wondering if there are any suspicions about the trannys for these. I know its REALLY early to tell - but hopefully someone has some knowledge about the state of the transmission for the newer models.

Thanks

I wouldn't worry. The problem apparently existed on the first 14,000 of the 04 model year, and fixes applied to those. Since then, there seem to be little or no problems whatsoever.

TL and most high-hp Acuras/Hondas have tranny issues. Deal with it

Exaggerated.

Actually, MOST don't.

Some do, however. But a change was made part way through the 2004 MY to deliver better lube to 2nd gear in the 5AT.

The older ones were recalled by Acura and retro-fitted as needed.

We have about 60,000 members here and I think I have heard no more than 50 people complain about a tranny problem. You do the math.

The 2nd gear problem was very rare, yes.

But the 3rd gear problem is very widespread and affected MANY TL/CL/Accord/MDX/Pilot/Odyssey/etc. And as far as we know, there is no known fix for that, except for a replacement with a rebuilt tranny which are also failing, most of the times at a faster rate than the originals.

The fact that the 2nd gear problem also affected the 3G leads me to believe that the 3rd gear problem is probably the same. Acura also reprograms the TCM/PCM for new shift points to go easier on the transmission.

I don't visit the 3G section as much as 2G, so I don't know if anybody has had a failed transmission yet. I hope not, but it could very well happen.

There was/is a second gear lube issue that was in all the 2G and many 3G 5ATs. They did a recall and installed an oil jet. My guess is that all 3Gs have it but most were installed at the factory. I have not heard/seen anything about the 5AT tranny being redesigned.

The tranny issue was mostly in the 2G S models where the engine made more lower end torque and the ECU allowed you to down shift into 2nd and 3rd at much higher speeds. All that probably contributed to baking the 2Gs trannies. When the rebuilts were put in they replaced the ECU and the shift points were changed. I imagine these changes were passed along in the 3G.

Call American Honda's Consumer affairs at 1-800-382-2238. Make sure you have your vehicle identification number to inquire about the tranny issue. Good luck.
