Tranny fluids Amsoil
Tranny fluids Amsoil
Hey guys,
So i ordered the Amsoil ATF transmission oil and when i called and schedule an appointment with my mechanic he said DO Not Put that stuff in your car, Acura recomends the genuine tranny oil, should i just by pass his recomendation and just go put in the amsoil tranny oil instead... or go ahead and get OEM oil ?
i would say he is a 8-out of a 10 at his shop , just that i known him for over 10 years and i do trust my mechanic ..

Hmm, thas quite the pickle....However, Amsoil does offer a warranty and states that their ATF is compatible with Honda Z1. But your mechanic seems to be a friend who you trust, so to the edumaction you must turn!
This is a post from a hardcore tribologist (spelling?), who also appears to be one hell of a Mechanical Engineer. He used the Amsoil product in his car, and seems to be liking it (although, i think hes MIA for quite a while now) Hope the below link helps, theres more info in the 3G Garage.

^^^Much argument about the Z1 and Amsoil....Also has a few bobistheoilguy links in it, page 2 of the thread.
Keep in mind that it seems like 3G TL trannies are beginning to fail like the 2G, and if you dont want any hassle from the dealer, your best bet is to just change frequently with the Honda Z1 ATF. Makes me think even more about my decistion to switch over...hmmmmm....

I would agree with him, in the past when I used non-Honda ATF/Z1 fluid in my 1989 Legend, it shifted very harshly and poorly with Mobil ATF and Castrol ATF. I put the Honda stuff back in and it went back to shifting smoothly.

I agree very much with that article since AT's are very different in terms of operation and components from one auto manufactuer to another. So I've never subscribed to the one fluid fit's all solution that the Amsoil cult and others have preached.
For the MT, it is a very different story since the internal operation and components of a manual from one manufactuer to another are extremely similar. For that reason I'll probably switch over the GM-MTF/FM fluid next month since my 3rd gear has started to become more difficult to engage.

I have a case of Amsoil ATF that I havent used yet because my mechanic also highly recommended against using anything but oem stuff...
Perhaps he's not familiar with amsoil products though, and I'm damn curious who actually makes the Honda ATF...
Maybe I'll try after the tranny warranty expires...

^ i think someone on here said that using any other tranny fluid voids warranty. I think it has happened to their car (MT) and honda found out he was using some other oil and did not cover for his tranny? can anyone confirm this? I'm planning on doing mine soon, and plan on getting it from Honda....
