touchie Brakes???

Does anyone have sensentive Brakes. I was on the freeway and a car slowed down on me. I placed the brakes not to hard but I end up skidding out and had to come to a complete stop. It really freaked me out. No accident but it was close just because the brakes seem way to sensentive. What you people think???

Skidded?

The TL has ABS. You can't lock up the brakes and skid unless the ABS isn't working and then you'd have a warning light on the dash to indicate the ABS is out.

You'll get use to them

I experienced the same thing. For the first few weeks my wife wore a helmet to protect her from the windshield. But now that I'm use to it, I can apply the breaks much better.

I had to brake pretty hard once when I first got my car, to avoid hitting a pedestrian running across the street. I did lock up my brakes for a couple of seconds and did skid. No ABS light came up. It was not raining, or snowing. Perfectly clear and dry day. So it is possible.

To the original poster:
Personally, I like the brakes. It is not too sensitive for me, and easy to modulate. Perhaps you still have to get used to them?

They are much more sensitive than my Camaro SS brakes were. However, I have gotten used to them and am not putting passengers through the windshield any more. Just like anything else, steering, acceleration, torque steer, etc just have to get used the car.

You also have brake assist on these cars. When hitting on the brakes it will actually push down the pedal with you so you dont need to apply a lot of pressure, I think its great, but takes some time to get use too.

I too think the brakes are too sensitive. But eventually, you'll get used to them. I'd prefer them to be a little more linear in response. I think the brake assist is kicking in way too early. It's not awful, but could be better.

Its funny because I was going to post a similar thread. These brakes are definitely too sensitive. You tap them for a normal stop and you end up about 50 feet before you intended to stop. But, yes, you get used to it.

Guys,

You should try out the brakes on the G35 if you thought our brakes were sensitive. It's a damn hair trigger on those. You lurch forward with every application at city speeds. That was one of the biggest complaints automotive journalists and owner had after getting behind the wheel. The TL actually is reasonably linear in my opinion. Good stopping power when you need it but smooth when you want to be. I guess it's all relative to what you have experience with.

Might have seemed like it but.

I did lock up my brakes for a couple of seconds and did skid.
It might have seemed like a couple of seconds, but it wasn't. The system reacts in milliseconds to a lockup condition or the ABS would be worthless. There may be a momentary chirp at first application but not for long.

The brakes on the TL are effective at hauling the car down from speed. That isn't being touchy, that just points up how mediocre brakes are on the average car.

My reply is based on the posters original statement about skidding to a stop. If the ABS is working properly that simply cannot happen - period.

I've tried the ABS out by going out on a deserted road and standing on the brakes from 70 mph. The car came to a quick, straight, skidless stop with the ABS doing its job.

hey guys, i can't believe this thread. i'm not johnny "the TL is perfect in all respects" but i LOVE these brakes. they have kept me out of a few accidents when i've been zoning out and they always seem to stop me perfectly. when you see the stop coming up, you only have to gently touch them. isn't that what brakes are supposed to do??

With ABS, it is possible to leave "skid" marks on the road, however they are intermittent in nature (that's why you can hear the tires chirping at full application).. The ABS system will ramp up to the point of instantaneous lockup and then back off, so there is a bit of lockup. This way, it can account for changing traction conditions..

Accident investigators can still estimate the speed of an ABS induced stop by measuring the skid mark, it's just lighter and more intermittent..

I prefer the sensitive brakes. I driven other cars like the Corolla, Accord, Camry and most of their brake pedeals you have to push in a bit before it starts to slow..
