Torque steer!!

Hi everyone,

I have had my 2008 Acura TL Type-S for about 6 months now and love the car. However, torque steer is a problem that is more irritating and apparent than I thought it would be. Even when I am accelerating on the highway, the steering wheel pulls side to side and this is very annoying.

Are there any upgrades I can do to reduce this? Would wider tires help?

I would appreciate any help.

Thanks very much

Hi...

I notice the torque steer when I accelerate from a stop, but also on the highway, when I accelerate from moderately low rpm's, around 3,000 to 4,000, and accelerating moderate to hard, but not full throttle. Any ideas?

I know your car has low miles but have the alignment checked. My base auto model got to where it would torque steer from 65mph under heavy throttle and the alignment was off.

if you are at an onramp and floor it, your car will pull hard to the left... it is a characteristic of the power to the front wheels...

can it be reduces by wider tires, from my experience it was slightly less drastic

Cool Here is your answer to the issue!

2009 TL SH-AWD. It just goes - no pulling to ether side. It's the only fix I know. They used to say, that any FWD car with 200HP at the wheels. Was going to have torque steer. I think they are right. That is why I am waiting for the 2011 TL SH-AWD 6MT. I know I said 11. After driving the TL with SH. I loved it. I don't want any more power from my 06. More power = more torque steer! I just need to save my penny's for His BIG BOTHER!
In 11......

Torque steer? I don't know, I gun my car at onramps, and curvy roads, it holds the road beautifully with almost no effort. I may correct the over/under steer, but I don't notice doing it.

Maybe it's your driving? Go in to the turn early, slow down, come out straight, accelerate gently after apex. For FWD this car handles great. Check your wheel balance, pressure and alignment.

I forgot to mention, yes, from start there is a pull to a side, but that's VSA telling you to relax. Our cars from start are crapppppppppppp. From rolling, it's a beast =]

yep, whenever you put close to 300hp at front wheels, and the motor is sitting in the car sideways, thats what your going to get....i find it entertaining to drive for the most part....

Thier is something wrong with your alignment, if ur getting torque steer from highway speeds 60+. I get no torque steer from a stop anyway, they pretty much fixed with 07/08 models.

You might be hitting ruts from the trucks and the TL's wide tires will move around more than usual under acceleration.

Generally speaking, its just a matter of getting used to gripping the wheel firmer. If you're not a teenage girl or fashion model, then you should have the forearm strength to do so.

And gripping the wheel harder is way, way better than clenching your buttocks hard while going fast around a turn in a RWD car.

Btw, the MT's LSD makes torque steer worse in turns because it feeds the inner wheel more torque and pushes the car out of the turn. The AT is better in turns while the SH-AWD behaves like an anti-LSD because it feeds the outer wheels more torque.

i would say that if you dont get tourqe steer from a stop then there is something wrong with your car...and there is no fix for something that is inherint with this kind of hp on a front drive car...

btw, my 07 type s has a ton of tourqe steer from a dead stop...

make sure the recall for power steering hose is done, and mention it pulls under throttle, please check and advise if normal. Call and speak with the service manager,Ask if the Head Tech can take a drive with you to verify if prob or normal for how you are driving it
Read the owner book for extra hints on how systems work, unless you are doing burnouts the TCS should not be active at low speeds

Also go to a dealer and drive another of same year/model...if they ask, thats your buddies TL and you like it so much you want one!

Much can be learned about driving the car and your personal driving habits-in a single day at High Performance Driving School- your TL on a real race track with a pro race driver as your passenger- giving instant feedback and advice on how to drive the TL
See website for local tracks and various car clubs that rent the facilty and hold class days

in 2005 an 05 Turbo TL won its class! and 3rd overall!! at the 25 Hours of Thunderhill!
Everyone laughed when they showed up, no fwd car can compete against rwd in Endurance racing~

I'll say it again, no TL should have torque steer at highway speeds. It's an alignment issue.

Torque steer?......hmmm...nope, can't say i ever noticed it. But i am developing really strong grip in both of my hands for some reason. I've been driving rwd V8's and fwd 4 bangers so never had any experience with torque steer. Then i bought my self a 6spd TL and now i do. I'm adjusting my driving style and adapting to the car. I have to admit though, it did catch me of guard with how hard this car pulled side to side when you take it through the gears. On a flat staright road it's more managable but as soon as there are bumps or a curve you have to pay attention. It is what it is, a fwd with some power so thats what you get.
