Is this too much?
Depends on the pads, but generally speaking, if you have a Type S, brake pads are about $51.49 for the fronts for Duralast Gold Ceramics, and $34.99 for the rears for the same brand. If you throw in Duralast Gold Rotors, and you're looking at $71.99 each for the fronts. That subtotals to $233.46 ($16.34 in taxes) and totals to $249.80 (assuming 7% tax) in parts alone for decent quality parts from Autozone. You paid $1,120, so yes, you overpaid by $760.20, assuming 1hr of labor at $110/hr.
Take this as a learning lesson and get the parts and change them yourself next time, safely.

if it’s a type-s or 6m it needs the Brembo rotor along with the caliper. It’s definitely necessary IMHO.
If you were charged standard dealer rates and got OE parts, this doesn't seem too out of line. Still pricey as a all hell, but doesn't seem to be too out of the expected price range. Especially if it is a TLS as HVAC34 calls out...actual OE parts for the Brembos are not cheap at all. Can it be done cheaper? Obviously it can be. Really depends on what parts you want to use and if you want to do it yourself or not. I paid $300 for the dealer to turn my rear rotors and replace the pads. Pricey, but at the time, I did not have the free time to do it myself.
The real question is if you were expecting a discount or just quality work out of the family friend?
