TLS vs S2K & 1.8L Jetta
TLS vs S2K & 1.8L Jetta
Had 2 runs Monday night against a 1.8L Jetta & S2000, both having a bit of mods. Ran from 40 both times & was in SS mode starting 2nd.
RE: S2000
From the go, we both kept even. As soon as he shifted, he gained a bit of a quarter panel on me. Once I shifted into 3rd, I regained a small bit. He shifted once more and started pulling a bit. At the end, he was probably only a car to a car and a half ahead. He had a passenger as did I. He just had a new clutch placed in it, lighter wheels, but I don't know what else.
RE: Jetta
If I recall, the 1.8L are turbocharged but he also had a small tune. From the go, once more, we were even. He shifted and pulled a fender, and stayed that way until I was nearing the end of 3rd and easily started a pull on him. By 4th, I had a car on him. He said he was gaining, but we shut it down before we could see if he was. He had no passenger, though.
I was a tad disappointed, but the S2000 driver was surprised the TL kept as close it did, esp for what the TL weighs next to the S2000 & the Jetta.
So 1 loss, and 1 tie at the least. Because I started a pull on the Jetta into 4th, I would have liked to see if the outcome would have done the same to the S2000. Also due to that, I would have never thought the 4th gear would be as strong as it was. The TL also needs an oil change, so in a way, I'm hoping a fresh change would prove to be much better, but I'm not relying on that solely.
All in all, some good runs. Hoping a pulley & pre-cats would be enough to edge out the S2K & pull away faster from the Jetta next time.

sounds like fun
but i feel like you should've/could've done better...in ALL honesty, s2ks are freaking just hyped up...they're not as quick n/a as everyone makes them out to be. i've beaten a few: from a dig and from a roll. @ 100+ i walk away...i know...not through personal experience

Rick do you have a 6MT? Also, it definitely wasn't your oil.
Even with a performance clutch, I'm a bit surprised the s2k walked you towards the top end especially with a passenger. The Jetta is not in the same class no matter the boost. That's a win.

All Hondas seem to be very fussy in their performance, somedays it runs great other days it doesn't want to get out of it's own way. This is really the case for all cars but it seems especially true for any Honda product. The thing that stands out is the s2k's lighter wheels, obviously had they been stock you would have pulled. If you have a 5AT it is expected but if your a 6MT, I would change that oil, clean the air filter, and check my tire pressure just for good measure.

thats a good list of mods there
how much are you putting down to the wheels?
Yea unless the S2 is like full bolt on with a tune or something...then gg
I played cat and mouse with this S2 that went to the same school as me this one time. I came up on him fairly easy..then when it was my turn, I was pulling off pretty easy..We ran a couple times..dam I got to school hella quick that day ahahaha
I was suprise to see a Caucasian man in this 50's with a mustache and stunner shades driving a S2 that dam fast
I think he was stock tho but im pretty much stock myself. btw I did not downshift I think I was already in 4th or 5th

i had a 2004 6MT TL till january of 2009,
traded it in for a 04 s2000.
heres what i can see thus far.
the s2000 feels faster at speeds form 20-70. (0-20 depends on the driver and lauch IMO)
the tl felt like it pulled harder in 4th gear all the way up till bout 120mph.
now a while back i raced an s2000.
he was moded (not sure how much but, def a catback n intake.)
i had a passenger n he was alone. we went from a 75 roll all the way up to about 124mph (i looked at the speedo)
dead even! (i was completely stock with 1 extra person)
my guess i could have more with out the extra weight!
but, i dont think you can WALK away from one!

Coming from somone with 2 past s2000s (ap1 and ap2)....
Dont get so big headed, remember big guy. you WALKED away from a (depending on year) 2.0L 4cyl or 2.2L 4cyl. remember that now. 3.5L V6 walking away from a 2.0L 4cyl is nothing to brag about. like racing a fucking beffed up corolla. S2000s werent built for highway speed nor digs (shitty torqe) if anything its better on the high way (9k RPM for ap1). But if u REALLY wanna play with an s2000, hit him up on the auto X tracks or do a touge battle up a mountain. and he WILL run from you. he'll be gone in the first few turns and youll give up with the boat like of a TL. Go pick on someone your own size like a new 3 series or m3 even. Then see whos the big guy. All I had was I/H/TP/E and walked away from 2 different 350z's (V6s if u didnt know) but thats all talk cuz I dont have a vid.
I dearly miss my s2000s. honestly the BEST car's ive EVER, EVER drivin. Dont get me wrong. I love my TL too but not for racing at all, just practicality purposes.

I don't think you have seen how the TL has beaten the G35 and IS350 at Willow Springs by over 2 seconds? For comparison, the G35 is about as fast, if not faster than S2k at Tsukuba. If you need proof, let me know, I will find you some best motoring videos from youtube or something. By the way..I love S2k...in case you are wondering.

So not true. There are 1.8 Jettas running in the 13's at well over 100 mph.

The TL-S was dead even with the S2K-S in Willow Springs as well. Check out the HP / weight ratio.
Okay I overstated but I just went to dragtimes and I couldn't find a single one that was running mid low 13's.. The fastest GLI reported was 13.947 @ 103 and he had K04-20 turbo upgrade running 3" downpipe with 20 psi boost. Every other 1.8T was in the low-mid 14's with ECU upgrades running K03's @ 18-24 psi. There's a possibility that some BMF 1.8T Jetta's running low 13's are around but not many.. might as well save $10k and upgrade to something faster.
To answer the question of the TLS' handling, yes. It may not be as fluid, dynamic or neutral as a rwd, but the more important factor is grip, which is also a huge component of the tire in use. If you know how to drive it through the Apex, than it's setup can be more benefical than most rwd's.

if you accept the chalenge, there is no "BUT" obviously you thought it was a fair race. so when that 2.0 with a turbo runs away from ya, dont say "if i had boost..... ... .. .. . ". same for when that 4.6 walks you. dont even let this cross your mind "his engine is XX as big as mine" learn to deal with the outcome n give props to the driver n awsome machine that just walked you!!!
time to go home n start modding, or learn how to drive.
The tests weren't necessarily performed under the same conditions or with the same driver but it's safe to assume most factors were negligible and those were the best lap times of several laps. The TL can really handle well and can definitely go head to head with lighter cars that have 100+ hp. It's okay to be proud.. lol.
