TL vs. 5-series

If there is any speculation that a 540i would pull on a TL or even TL-s, and want some friendly testing, PM me.

BMW 2001 540i 0-60 in 5.5
BMW 2003 540iA 0-60 in 6.1
BMW 2004 545i 0-60 in 5.5 (some say 5.2)
Acura TL Type S 0-60 in 5.5
Now those are just numbers. So you can't just say that the BMW is faster than the Acura or the other way around. Before I forget, the BMW is a cow compared to the Acura. It had a lot to do w/ the driver. Now if I put a professional racer in his car against me, I'll prolly lose. That wasn't the case. When my friend and I did our friendly race, it was on a deserted highway (well it was deserted at the time) and we went from 0-90 mph and my car took his 545i stock vs. stock. I didn't smoke him by any means but he was on my rear bumper slowly pulling ahead but once we hit 90, we both stopped. We did it twice and the same result. The second time he was on my back door. Now that was when I was stock. Now I'm modified so I'm sure I'll take him by more. That is one of the rare times I street race. So if you are challenging me w/ your 540i...i'll gladly take you up on that but on the track. Next time I hit up the track won't be until summer or early fall. So I'll let you know.

Power (SAE net): 325 bhp @ 6100 rpm
Torque (SAE net):330 lb-ft @ 3600 rpm
Transmission: 6-speed manual
Curb weight: 4000 lb
Zero to 60 mph: 5.5 sec
Zero to 100 mph: 13.2 sec
Zero to 130 mph: 23.5 sec
Street start, 5-60 mph: 6.0 sec
Standing 1/4-mile: 14.1 sec @ 103 mph
So dr-brains510 is right on with the 545i. I'm not sure how the automatic would affect the acceleration but I guess it doesn't affect too much. However, we should look at the street start (5-60mph) instead as that's more realistic. Given that his TL-S is automatic, I don't think it will hit 60 in 5.5, more likely to me 6 too, which is similar to the 545i in this case. However, with a trap speed of 103mph, the 545i should pull away sooner or later. But then, ithese cars seem to be pretty close in performance and drivers' skills seem to be more important.

^^^ exactly...btw his car is also automatic and prolly won't hit 60 in 5.5 either...but you hit it on the head iforyou....it's a drivers race....sure he'll pull away sooner or later...but we didn't go that fast for him to have that opportunity lol.

2007 Acura TL Type-S-----3636 lbs-----286bhp----256ft.lbs of torque
2002 540i/6----------------3757 lbs-----290bhp----325ft.lbs of torque
2004 545i-------------------3803 lbs-----325bhp----330ft.lbs of torque
You can interpret them however you want, but I wanted to show that the 5 series is hardly a "cow". If you still insist that it is a cow, I insist that you drive one before making these assumptions.

Hmm 540idinan, I think the 3803lb that you posted for 545i is for a non-loaded one as C&D posted 4000lbs (as shown in the link I posted).
04-06 TL Auto, or basically any pre 2006, including 2nd gen, suck a lot of power. However Honda made changes to the auto tranny, in fact, the auto tranny is even stronger than the one used on the RL (as there's torque going to the front wheels, instead of all 4). The tranny is more aggressive and responsive than before. Not sure exactly how all these changes impact the performance of the 2007+ TL, but for sure there's improvement. By the way, 2nd gen TL-S auto with 260hp (more like 250 under new SAE) does 0-60 in 6.2s. I think it's save to assume that the 3rd gen TL-S AT should do the same in about 6 seconds.
According to C&D (again...), 540i is as fast as 545i to 60mph, 0.9 sec slower to 100mph. In other words, pretty close in terms of performance.
Finally, good luck to both of you if you guys do battle it out!

Agreed.
I test drove the 05 or 06 TL and it was decent. How did I know it was the 06 and older because the interior had that cheap plastic screen for the no navi's. The 07 + TL's have a nice clear looking screen for the non Navi's. When I did test drive the car in SS mode it was good. Then we bought the 07 TL and after break in I went nuts on it on SS mode and it felt like it had more power. I felt I was being pushed back really hard into the seat and it felt goooood. Also it shifted from one gear to the other alot faster compared to the test drive. When I shift up the RPM doesnt drop much but just a little and then continues to go. Loved that moment, especially the first time.

Thanks for the info! I read about the transmission changes on Temple of VTEC, but was hoping someone could confirm with that, and you did just that, perfect!
Were you able to shift from 1st to 2nd, or 2nd to 1st just by using the SS mode? It couldn't be done in 04-06. And how did it compared with 6MT? Is the gap closer?

Never tested the 6mt but would have loved to. I have my sister and mom driving the car sometimes therefore mt would be too difficult for them. Anyways, yes you can shift down from 3 to 2 or from a higher gear to a lower gear.
Also when you are on gear 1 and go full throttle then the gear doesn't shift automatically. I think most people knew about that.

For those who say the VQ AT models shift early, well, that's also the case for older TL (04-06) 5AT too....1st gear only goes up to 6300rpm in SS mode with full throttle.
