TL v. Maxima

Anyone have any input on the TL vs. the 3.5 Maxima?

It is simply an awful looking car period. After they did such a good job on the Altima, this was very disappointing. Who cares though as I have never particularily cared for Nissan products.

I test drove the Maxima regular and the sport version. Both don't even come close to the TL in performance and luxury. I took both the TL and the Maxima thru a right turn w/ water in the gutter. The Maxima locked it's front wheels, skidded thru the water and griped the road again after clearing the water. The TL was amazingly solid. It hit the gutter water, each wheel independently locked for a split second and regriped the road. There was more control in the TL. As for the luxury, just look at all the leather, ergonomics, and comforts of the TL as opposed to the chunky design of the Maxima. If you want a bargain sedan w/ bargain materials, go for the Maxima. If you want a bargain sport sedan with quality and comfort, get a TL.

Lets get this straight...you cant compare a nissan to an Acura....compare the nissan to a honda.(maxima and accord)...if u wanna compare a TL compare it with a G35
Acura is honda luxury, nissan is just regular nissan...

Test drove the Maxima 6MT. It has a nice engine and tranny, but I hated the interior of the car. For a few extra dollars, the Acura TL is so much nicer and refined ....

I had a '97 Maxima before my '04 TL. I wanted to get another Maxima, but I test drove it and the torque steer killed it for me. I hated the torque steer in the '97 and the amount in the '04 Max scared the hell out of me and the salesperson I drove with. I also hate that felty stuff they put on the doors. The car also took a nosedive in the looks department - looks like a bloated cow with a buck tooth. I loved my '97 Max because it was reliable as hell and the new Max has a great engine. It's everything else that I didn't like about the car.

I dunno about you guys, but I'm insulted by these Maxima comparisons. If it's really a comparison, I'm going to cancel my order and go back to BMW. I only want to see BMW, Audi and MB comparisons.

This comment is off-base. Since Nissan thinks they can sell the Maxima at the $30k range, it's a FWD car, and its their entry level luxury car, I think its more than fair to compare these two cars. The G35 is in a different segment and already has its hands full with the BMW 3 series and Audis, etc. However, it's interesting to note how a lot of consumers and critics are comparing the 2004 TL to a BMW 5 series.

Retarded statement. If a simple comparison can invoke such strong feelings for you, I don't even know what to think or say. The bottom line is the TL will be compared to the Maxima because it's in or near the same price range, but keep in mind that a lot of people are also comparing the BMW 5 series to the TL because of what it offers for a substantially lesser price.

Vandy, we need to get a little snobbery going here. Only compare us with the Germans, or if you have a 30" inseam, a G35. If we don't believe our ride is superior, how are we gonna carry it off with others? Bring up a Maxima at Bimmerfest and you will be tarred and feathered. Hah, try it on the S4 board.

Only you can tell. Drive them both. I'll be surprised if you like the Maxima better but if you do such is life!

Besides Cathy Bates, the Altima has one of the ugliest back ends i've ever seen. Goes to show that everyone has their own taste.

Regarding the Maxima, I also think its a loser in the looks department and the dash board is an abomination. But what do you guys expect Maxima owners to say? The devotion on each car owners website is like the devotion to NFL football teams. This whole comparison is funny.

Dude, Cathy Bates, what a freakin insult to the Altima. Now I have to tell you, I saw her in a movie with Jack Nicholson and I saw her naked. OMG that was something I did not want to see.

The Altima was not my favourite to begin with, but it grew on me. The new Accord also has a similar back end for the sedan.

I was originally in the market for a Maxima, back in June... but I didn't car for the look... particularly the rear windshield, it's to round... after one look at the TL, I fell in love... glad I went the direction I did...

I was originally in the market for Cathy Bates, but the rear end of the Acura was too good to pass up.

Not true. I go to Maxima meets all the time with friends. Once people get past that "mine is better than yours" stage, life gets much better.

Money Magazine just posted the Maxima as one of three of the worst cars for 2004 (along with Saturn Ion, and Cayanne).

Acura TSX was best dog with honarble mention to the TL.

Here is the main page to all the info (good and bad)

http://money.cnn.com/news/specials/bestcars/

from the article on the TSX:

If you simply must have more room or power, the impressive new Acura TL delivers a larger back seat, a sweet 270-horsepower V-6 engine and a vast array of luxury -- including a ground-breaking DVD surround-sound audio system that blows away conventional CD-based units. All for $33,200, loaded. Consider the TL the second half of a well-turned double play for Acura in 2004.

This is the problem with Acuras image to the general public and enthusiests.

Maxima and TL both high poiwered 30k+ FWD entry, luxo sporty sedans. Though the TL blows it out the water (except space) they will be compared.

I'm not moving up to a TL, I'm moving down payment wise, but I like the car better than my wife's GS400 and other than the fine edge of handling and seats, my BMW. I think it compares there. It's a whole world of feel above the Maxima, IS300 and even G35.

You are a homo... j/k. I agree that its awsome that bmw is compared to that TL... I guess thats what acura meant to do, and thats what they are doing.... Unfortunatly, i think nissan is trying to compete with KIA....

I think also the fact that they are high powered FWD cars... and another reason is because the I35 sucks..... To bad toyota doesnt care about whose better, maxima or TL.. because they are now the 2nd largest auto maker, and they didnt even need a who has a better v6 engine competetion to do it....

acutally, i think if you like your car, you dont need to compare it to anything else as long as you are happy... so what if the maxima is better... or worse..... If civic owners are happy with their fake HIDs, then thats cool too... whatever brings happyness....
