TL? TSX? TL Type S?
TL? TSX? TL Type S?
I didn't listen to my wife a couple years ago when I bought her a TSX instead of the Toyota Prius that she wanted. Now that she has fallen in love with her TSX I want to hand it down to the kids and buy her a 2008 TL Type S. She is okay with the idea but says she would rather I buy the kids a Civic or another TSX. I have been looking at TSX's and find that an '08 TSX is almost as much as a TL of the same year and I have an opportunity to buy a TL type S in beautiful shape for the same price as a regular TL. I have a very hard time bringing myself to spend as much on a TSX as a TL type S. Why is the TSX priced in the same league as a TL on the used market? What do you TL owners recommend.

Wow your kids are lucky. I would've much rather driven a TSX over my older sister's Solara. But the past is the past.
If you can get the Type S, go for it. I did and I'm pretty happy with the car!

TL-S all the way no question asked. BTW TSX used price kinda expensive compare to TL/TL-S I don't know why or what so special about the TSX but for the same price I would pick up 08 Honda accord V6 with all the option for cheaper.
Thanks for the input. Most are saying go for the TL-S which is definitely what I would do if the car was for me. The prices that I am looking at are 23,900 for a 2008 TL-S, (44000 miles) 22,900 for a 2008 TSX (32000 miles) and 16,000 for a 2011 EX-L Civic with 5000 miles on it. This is the Canadian market and all the cars are in like new condition. I guess the reason for the struggle is that I want the TL but because my wife is happy with her TSX it seems to make sense to buy the Civic.

The TL Type S cost just as much as a TSX bc it holds it value VERY well, not a lot of cars do that. Acura's in general have a high resale value. TL > TSX The TL has LED brake lights and the middle brake light is higher quality than the TSX, the TSX's middle brake light is the same as the Honda models. Also, TL is faster.
TLS-->TL--->TSX
Why pay the same for a TSX when you can get TLS or TL...that's common sense. And don't give the kids a car, make them buy it from you, even at a lower price it will be good for them.

Everyone needs to remember not all kids are spoiled and are all about gimmie gimmie from their parents. Some do actually deserve/earn this level of responsibility/respect from their parents. Many don't. Also consider what a young kid can afford from a safety perspective vs what a little help from a parent can upgrade them to. Do you really want your kids riding around in a 15 year old beater that may have other issues, or something that is a few years old with a much better safety and reliability record.
Now for the OP? I would say Civic for the kids. I don't know how different insurance is up there, but a Civic should be quite a bit lower than any Acura. Or like someone else said a Fit or Element should fit in that same range. If they are under 20, expect the car to get torn up some. Not because they won't care...just more of it tends to happen to the younger less experienced drivers.
The Civic would be cheaper for the kids. But if you want to upgrade your wifes TSX to the TL-S and give the kids the TSX. That's what I would do. Wife will love the upgrade. Kids will love the TSX. Win/win!!
Personally, I wouldn't give freshly licensed teenagers a TSX. They will inevitably bump/scrape/hit something and you're not gonna like the repair bill. I'd go for a used several year old Civic or Fit where cost of repairs, gas, and insurance wouldn't be as much as a TSX.
Thanks for the input. I showed my wife how you all claimed she would love the TL but she loves her TSX soooo I bought my daughters the 2011 Civic EXL. I got what I believe to be a fantastic deal and expect it will only depreciate about $1000/year over the next 4 or 5 years where as the TL would probably loose about 3 or 4000/year.
The Type-S is a much better buy. The TSX isn't nearly as safe as the TL (It's really safe, but weight is key here) so I highly recommend the TL. I'm turning 16 in April and will be getting my mom's '06 TL. I'd much rather have a TSX over a Civic though!
In 5 years when my oldest can drive he will be getting a 95 civic 4 door 5 speed haha. I will buy one in a couple years then spend the next 2-3 rebuilding it for/with him.
d15 with cx tranny should get about 47 mpg and be slow as turtles piss.
I agree though my wife never gets to drive my TL-S but not because she doesn't want to.
If you let your wife test drive a TL-S then that TSX wouldn't stand a chance.

I thought I had the Civic bought. I got everything lined up to get a bank draft at the bank today so I could go and pick up the new to me car only to find out my word wasn't enough to hold the car. He sold it to someone else for 300 dollars more than what he had agreed to sell it to me for. So I figured I'll get the TL type S but now my wife is totally opposed to that idea.
The particular Civic that I thought I had made a deal on was a 2011 EX-L with 5000 miles on it for 16,500. A new EX-L in Canada is 24,000.
I was sick of looking and was determined to buy something today so I bought a 2004 TSX with 50,000 miles on it for $12,500 - I bought it off the original owner who always kept it parked inside and it looks extremely nice for its age. So I am done - and relatively happy but I would have been a little more excited about having a TL - S in the garage.
I guess I am not done yet. It turns out the car I bought was last seen in the Acura dealership for service back in 2009. It had 100,000 miles on it back then. Now 3 years later it has 50,000 miles. The guy who sold it to me used a false name but fortunately I was able to find someone who recognized the guy and the police are on it.
4x4ord, I'm terribly sorry to hear that. It sounds like any car you try to buy, there's always some sort of catch.
Civic -> ends up being sold
TSX -> ends up having false recorded mileage
I believe that the Acura gods are encouraging you to purchase a TL-S. It's a sign.
