TL S-Type front bumper tabs

My 2007 TL S-Type has two tabs hanging from the front bumper below the license plate, as shown below. Anyone know what these tabs are for?

Those tabs attach to the plastic absorber on the bumper reinforcement bar. Bend them all the way up.

Yup bend them up and it'll be apparent as to where they attach to via plastic clips.

It looks like I am missing the plastic absorber on the bumper reinforcement bar.

just pull them back and up and they'll take the pressure off the lower part of the bumper...
