TL-S buying advice--now or wait??
TL-S buying advice--now or wait??
Talked to the dealer about buying a 2007 TL-S 5-speed a few months ago but they weren't dealing. Now the dealer called to say things are slow and wants to know if I'm interested in an 08. Does it make sense to buy now, or am I better waiting for an AWD TL (assuming it's coming for 09.)

Yeah, but there are *always* problems with the first year (some times into the 2nd year) of a redesign model's production run. Best to wait until the 2010 models come out.
Beyond that, you can't live in the future with it comes to technology items like computers, cars, etc. If you need one and you like the 2008, get it. If you have a car already, and don't need to jump on a new tomorrow, wait a week or so to "cool down" and weigh your options. This is the bet position to be in: a non-motivated buyer in a buyer's market who isn't afraid to walk away from the deal. Might help you get a better price too
Also, about AWD: unless you live in a region that gets a ton of snow, AWD will cost you precious gas mileage while offering you very little. If you want a sports car, get a Corvette. The TL is nice (I love mine), but it's not a sports car.

Prices which are very good right now will only get better. Right up until the 09 hits the showroom and the last 2008 is sold. The longer you can wait the better. When they shut dow current production in a few months, selection might start to be an issue. I'm trying not to buy first year production anymore. darksky is correct.
Thanks for all the input...yes I did mean 6-speed.
I live in Wisconsin so AWD would be useful. I am also waiting to check out the Saab 9-3 XWD when it comes out so I probably will end up waiting. I am in no rush.

The other comment about AWD is that it robs you of functional horse power. Some people think it'll make you faster off the line, but the reality with a small, non-turbo or super charged V6 (like the 3.2 or 3.5 L in our TLs) is that you're trading off more in HP loss through the extra tranny components than you're gaining in the traction.
Again, if you live in an area with a lot of snow -- and Wisconsin qualifies -- it'll help you in the winter. If however one gets it because of the misperception that it's going to make the Acura TL or TL-S into a super-car on dry pavement, with low 0-60 and 1/4 mile times, this hypothetical individual is in for a let down. Better off to get a real sports car in this scenario.

the SH-AWD rob's power. It takes more TQ to spin 4 wheels than 2. But it makes up for it in the turns and curves where the power is smooth and can be used alot more than in a regular 2WD setup.
Be patient. Like everyone says, as the '09 remodel approaches the dealers will be pressed to move their '08s. You'll be in a great position to deal on extras like A-Spec parts and accessories you want.
There will be a big marketing push with the new models (TSX too) and there will be buyers out there who will pay premium to have the latest and greatest ride. When the new Accords came out this fall people were paying MSRP for the '08s. The smart people were getting steals on outgoing '07s.
The newer models are going to have the requisite improvements but until the hype wears down the value won't be there until dealers will be willing to deal. Let Honda/Acura work out the bugs, too.

Also you can make the dealers do all the negotiating for you. Just make them fight each other on the price, "They offered me this can you beat it?". I had my price set before I walked on to the lot. All I had to do is be the middle man on the phone between the dealers. We have 3 in Houston. Got my 08 TLS for 36400 drive out. O, and if the dealer is far from you tell them couple hundred off the price won't get you to drive out that far. And always say drive out price, let them worry about taxes.

bearcat, I thought the '09s were supposed to be out in May...I guess March, May almost same time
^^
From what I've read around here:
- TL/TL Concept at NY Int'l Auto Show in March - this is what I propose the OP wait for. It should be very close to the production styling and features. Might get some specs on HP, Features, etc too.
- TSX mid-year release May/June
- TL Gen 4 Release Fall '08 (Sept/Oct)
