Slightly confused can someone explain?

I am backtracking myself and re-read my TL's information also read all the old reviews for my TL....why doesnt this seem to make sense to me?

(I drive a 2004 TL Sportshift)

2004 Base TL - 270hp....3.2L VTEC V6
2005 Base TL - 258hp....3.2L VTEC V6
2006 Base TL - 258hp....3.2L VTEC V6
2007 Base TL - 258hp....3.2L VTEC V6
2007 Type-S - 286hp....3.5L VTEC V6

Was the 2004 hp just misrepresented or what changed about the 3.2L that caused a 12hp drop?

I haven't really followed the history of the TL past 2004.

 

This question is asked many times. You can find your answers with a quick google search. Its cause of the change in the SAE hp ratings

 

The J32 (3.2L) engine in all 2004 -2008 TLs is the same. The method for measuring horsepower changed for the 2006 model year so the rating for the TL dropped by 12 horsepower. The 2004-2005 were both measured using the older system resulting in 270 hp. The 2006 -2008 TLs rated at 258hp were rated using the new system. I would guess that the 2007-2008 TL-S would've been rated at 296-300hp in the old system.
