2.2 CL - Intake good idea?

Hello all...

So yesterday my buddy at good ol' 77 Auto Parts calls me and tells me he has my Ractive SuperFlow Intake in.... so I jump for joy and run down there to pick it up....

I start dismantling the stock intake right there in the parking lot.
After removing the box and tube, I notice the tube is connected to another tube underneath and that leads to another small box...
ARGGGGGHHHHHH!!! Now I'm wondering how soffisticated this stock intake really is?

I hear that sometimes an aftermarket intake reduces horsepower... Can any offer some input?

Should I have this intake installed or is the stock one maybe alot better?

I know these kinds of questions always come up, but I did a search on intakes and couldn't find anything... so help.... please...

Get the intake. The only thing the stock one does well is reduce noise. You will be SO happy with the intake. I can't imagine loosing any power (maybe a 1/2 hp at low end, but more in general) the new sound by itself will make you happy

Lots of good input... thanx guys....

After I saw how complicated the install looked, I went to see a mechanic, and he says he's got to do custom work.....

He says that sensors must be bypassed, and that he has to drill holes into the intake to add some sensors....
He says he took this knowledge from the intake he did on a 1.6EL a few days before.... obviously two very different vehicles....

does this sound right? Maybe there's a kit I'm missing?

The only thing I got in the package was a nice chrome intake tube (apologies for the terminology), a bracket, rubber yellow ring (to hold the tube) and one long, thin yellow tube to connect to the engine.

Thanx again in advance.

i got an injen intake and it had everything you needed. you use one less hose than stock but there is nothing fancy like you were talking about to my knowledge.

You just secure the new pipe and hook up the hose. If you needed a whole for the sensor on the intake pipe there would be one pre-drilled. On my previous car there was a sensor and all I had to do was stick it in the pre drilled hole in the pipe. I have the Ractive intake your speaking about. I've had it on my Cl for about 12,000 miles no problem. It was a rough winter though, especially in RI. A lot of sand and what not. So, I got rid of the ractive cone filter, and got myself a K&N. The K&N in my opinion is far superior. I suggest you get one too.

yeah, that mechanic is trying to rip you off. It is a pretty simple installation, you basically just dismantle everything that comes in the place where the intake is supposed to be, then hook up the hose and intake tube, and then secure itall. Might take a half hour at most.

I'm glad I asked the people that count

Zigried - My buddy gave me the K&N filter.

Looks like I'm good to go then.
But incidently, does anyone know what that stock secondary tube and little box are for? Maybe something todo with the AC/heater?

You might be referring to the resonator. It helps a lot in reducing the noise... but from what I know, that 's about it.

I hope this helps!

If that secondary tube you are referring to is a 1/8" rubber hose just plug it. I installed an AEM under hood intake on my '97 CL and it was pretty straight forward and I am by no means mechanically inclined.

The only purpose of a stock or aftermarket intake tube is to suck in air. You could connect the cone filter directly to the engine if you really wanted to. Once you get it installed you will be happy.

The secondary box is a resonator all it does is reduce noise. And maybe collect some leaves and stuff but totally pointless. rip that shit out.

First off, I am a total modding noobie.

I have a 97 2.2 as well and am looking for a new intake. The only one I can find is this one:

Intake

Any good?

All others I have seen are for the 3.0.

Any other suggestions for starting out?

Thanks

Most people have injen or aem. If you do a search for injen or aem on the web, you will find plenty of sites with these intakes. They are both good quality and provide good results.

My bad I forgot, this is one of the most important things. All intakes for a 94-97 Accord will fit our cars, because we have the same motor as the the accord EX. That's what the Injen and Aem will be listed under.
