The TL/ES war on E46's.

Lol at the title..

Race #1: ES350 vs E46 330i or 330ci . From a dig.
I was in my dad's ES350 and this 330i or 330ci (can't remember) flies be me. Now I know the ES isn't some sports car but it still has some balls. So I get up next to him and I signal him to follow me. We hit a light; I'm the first car in the left lane, he's the second car in the right lane. I take off just fast enough so that he can maneuver himself behind me and then next to me in time for the next light. We pull up and I hear him revving, getting ready to launch while I'm looking for a way to turn off the traction control...seconds later, I still couldn't find it and the light turned green. We both launched at the same time, but traction control really destroyed my launch and he launched well. Once I caught traction I walked right by him and shut it down at about 60mph. about 1.5-2 car lengths even with a bad launch.

Race #2: TL vs E46 3-series. From a dig.
I was getting tailgated tonight by a honda ridgeline so I sped up to get away from him and right when I put some distance between myself and the truck a white E46 pulls up out nowhere along side me. We pull up to a light and I get ready to launch and I can hear him doing the same as we both inch forward. VSA off, Revs building while I hold the brake and tap the gas. Green, Go! I let go of the brake and step on the gas just enough and then drop the hammer and push the pedal all the way down. I got some tire spin (bald tires) and he launched ok. I shut it down at about 60-65mph with about 3-4 car lengths between us. I pulled into my turning lane and the dude drove by and put a thumbs up outside of his window as he drove off.

Good times.

- David.

woah...didn't know an 04 AT TL with couple of bolt ons able to leave 3-4 car lengths on the E46. Even with bad launch on the E46, it wouldn't be that big gap I thought.

Definitely not vs. a 330.

It was a pretty good gap, I was really tired last night so we'll say 3 car lengths.. I'm gonna' guess it was a 325i or 328i cause I didn't expect that much either. Who knows, maybe he shut it down once I passed him?

I've taken a 330 from a dig before too. 1 car length and shut down at 60. But I should also add that he took me from a dig 5-6 times before I got him once haha. It's a friend of mine from the gym. whenever we'd leave at the same time, we'd end up at a light together, "coincidentally".

I didn't take it that way, not sure about everyone else. It's street racing, not "what it says on paper" racing, anything can happen and a win is a win. Great kills.

Look at the above. lol. I never said it was a 330i, I didn't even get to see the badging. He pulled up next to me and I saw that it was an E46, and that's all I said it was. And then I said "I'm gonna' guess it was a 325i or 328i cause I didn't expect that much either. Who knows, maybe he shut it down once I passed him? ".

The bmw wasn't racing you...

You have exhaust +5-7hp max...bald tires - in other words you lost plenty in traction and whp. A RWD bmw will take you from a dig any day, any time..it's later when you get the chance to overtake, above 50-60mph, when RWD runs out of low end torque.

You just had fun and that's what counts! Happy TLing and be safe.

LOL, you should research BMW's a little, before making incorrect assumptions and statements. There are plenty of BMW's that a TL with bald tires will beat to 60 mph, the 325 being one of them.

325 is granted a low hp engine (but excellent low torque), a little chip on that sucker...and hello 260-300hp. But yes base 325 you can match with a 3.2TL, but 3-4 car lengths.. the guy was not racing him. I've owned BMWs... I know the rides. On top of 3rd, a TL would of been waving a middle finger for all I care while letting the BMW smell the exhaust.

Base TL - roughly 205 whp? I forgot the numbers

My current 08 TL-S with innovative mounts can keep ground with 330s, I'm planting more whp than a unmoded TL-S. But a BMW still has an advantage from a dig. It is simple physics. Pull vs Push... Besides, I condemn street racing period.

Have a nice day guys!

Nice kills! The ES350 pulls hard just like the Camry 3.5L SE. The camry is capable of low 14's so the slightly heavier ES is still a mid 14 second ride with a great launch.

6MT E46 330i ZHPs are 14.2@99mph cars and the even the non-ZHP 330i 6MT is a 14.4@97mph car. That's more than any light bolt-on TL 5AT is going to be able to handle.

You beat me to it Dave. With all the attention the E46 M3 gets, many don't realize how capable a 330i/Ci 6MT can be.
