TL Doors

Hey, why are the doors on this thing so dang heavy??? I swear, when i open, i have to watch out because it always swings right back with so much force. My wife and child have the hardest time getting out because of them. And if you're on any kind of incline, watch out!

On the upside, you can close the doors easily with little or no force.

I don't think it’s that the doors are too heavy. I think it's because of that damn thing that goes into the door. That piece that keeps the doors from swinging to far open and damaging the door. I don't know what it's called. But I think Acura made that thing so the doors would close easy.

The problem is it makes the door almost feel spring loaded. Everyone I know hates it including me. If the door isn’t in one of the three pre-selected positions the damn door won’t stay.

I love the heavy doors. It may just be me but I feel as though the door being heavier equates to higher quality--more sound insulation, etc. It seams as though the cheaper the car...the lighter the door and more road noise. I remember my parent's 500 SEL door was like a vault door--just felt solid.

I drive a carpool to work and who ever sits in front always gets waked by the door because they never see it coming back. It is really kind of funny.

i personally hate the heavy doors because whenever somebody leaves the car they seem to just push the door lightly but the door ends up slamming and the sound is terrible lol

Is it me?

When the windows are down (on the driver and front passenger side) and you close the door it makes a complete differ sound...like the window is loose inside the door.

complete differ sound when the window is up all the way and shut the door.

guess it's good on a windy day when the wind can swing your door open and slam it in a car parked next to you.

Heavy doors are also a good sign of quality craftsmanship. Overtime the doors will not become light and plastic feeling as they did on my 02 Type S TL. After 3 years with the 2G TL the doors felt cheap as if they where just thrown together. Almost all German vechiles that I have come across have similiar feelings in the way the doors open and close, the 3G TL has come closer to that and IMO feelings much better.

Since this is one of the safest cars you can drive, I'm sure there's plenty of reinforcement from side impact which contributes to the weight. I'll gladly put up with it.

Agreed!!! My driveway has a slight grade. Often if I'm gathering things or linking bluetooth when getting in or out - the door will swing back on my shin. Ouch!

I like the heavy doors. You can open the door half way, get in and it will close by itself. Very covenient.

I hate the doors. They swing back on the kids and guests. I don't think quality construction should be confused with a detent that is too weak.

Is there a fix so the door will remain open?

I thought the doors were light as well- much lighter than my Prelude... Must admit I just don't get it...

Do admit that the window rattle when door closes and window is open thing drives me NUTS. If that's the worst thing about the car than what the hey?

I would pay a reasonable amout of $$ to have someone fix the loose window thing.

That's what I think. The dealer has 3 women standing there telling them the doors suck and their response is that they are set up that way so they have a "light touch" and close easy. I'm just trying to see if anybodys come up with a fix.

I think the door thing is for safety. If you're on the side of the road, the door doesn't stay open, so it's less likely to be hit by someone driving by, I guess.

I just joined but you can read this thread or ask TL owners in an Acura service line and get many negative comments. I think it was a "cute" idea but it's annoying.

Have you had many doors torn off your cars by people driving by?

Well there you have it. I'm glad I asked. Doors being ripped of everywhere and I didn't know. 17 times? Ouch. Just out of curiosity, do you close the doors when you drive? That could expalin some of the ripped of doors, heretofore known as "doornage", at stop signs and traffic lights.

Perhaps Acura should come up with a breakaway hinge instead. Just go pick the door up bolt it back on. Doors flying everywhere.....

The 4 doors on the TL are actually thicker than the other panels of the car. Try knocking on them and you can hear the difference. Acura made these against door dents or dings

Compared to my old Buick LaSabre, the doors on my TL are Hella-light.

I noticed the same exact thing when I first opened the door and it came back at me.

Then the second time I opened it I expected it to happen and it did. It continues to do this to this day. So I warn my passengers to beware of the guillotine effect of my kamikaze doors. As far as the children, I will alert the polite and quiet ones. But, I kind of enjoy the noisy ones getting blind-sided by the killer door.

I just visualized this happening (in a movie or something), and for some reason I found that extremely funny. Thanks for the laugh this morning.

Seems like we need something with high viscosity to slow down the door closing mechanism. Who wants to experiment? Molasses, tar? I can see it now, people struggling to open/close their door sloooowly

I'm thinking SAE 60 or higher?

wow guys.... this thread is too funny. All because of the doors. Gotta be a way to protect yourself without being reemed by the door all the time. My garage is small, so it's hard sometimes when i'm trying to open it and not bang my wife's car with my own door. I like the solid feel but hate the damage they cause. If anyone solves this, please let us know!
