The stopping distances on the TL usually weren't very good because of the piss-poor OEM tires (Turanzas). Slap a set of great tires on and stopping distances will improve dramatically.

Tires play a huge roll. The tires you get with the TL are junk, but that aside, the brakes are definatly pretty good. While I have seen better, 124 is pretty good. What are the distances on the AT brakes? In addition, for those with autos, will tranny braking reduce your breaking distance, and if so, by how much.

Michelin PS-2's did it for me!! Braking with my Brembo's is the best I've ever had with a sedan. Frankly, the only other car I've driven that had better brakes was a Porsche Turbo Carrera that I had the opportunity to drive several years ago. That car (Ruff Modified) was simply unbelievable.

I have driven on both the EL42's and the MXM4's. Verdict? They both suck, and it's pointless to argue which one sucks more.
I love the brembos, minus the brake dust, and I remember someone saying "you can crack your skull on the steering wheel" with these brakes... graphic, but true.
Mario - I beg to differ that the conti's are good tires. They're decent at best.

The Brembos saved my car this morning. I was merging onto an onramp and some loko joko was coming up my left side and pulled right in front of me. There was less than a cars length between me and the guy in front of me and this turd forces his way in, then SLAMS on his brakes!!
I swear I was 2 inches from hitting him in the backend. I was so pissed. So count 1 for the brembos and my cat-like reflexes...
BTW, Im getting flat spots on my Michelins, anyone else have this problem. Brake dust is also worse than you guys say it is, and you say it is pretty bad. I didnt know it was "this" bad, man o man. I still wouldnt give it up though.

Flatspots are usually caused by jamming on the brakes so you don't hit the dummy in front of you, but the ABS should prevent this by letting the wheels move instead of locking up, or tires out of balance.
Since you probably don't get to jam on your brakes too often, you should get the balance checked out.

I guess it may not be flat spots then, I dont have to stop hard like that and the tires continue to roll. But the problem I have is when I first drive it after its been sitting all night, the tires sound like they have flat spots or like they are wearing poorly - then after about 3 miles, they sound normal. Maybe the tire pressure is too low. Could be due to the dealer not prepping it correctly, I dont know. Kind of nerve racking because my 2000 C5 had a similar problem and it was due to the tires feathering.

Oh, those kind of flat spots.
That is more or less normal with high performance tires because of the nylon belt. Some people don't get them, some do and live with it, and some think they are so bad they change tires. Really depends on the brand and model of tires.
I had them really bad with the original equipment EL-42's on my 2004 TL, but when I changed to Bridgestone LS-Z's (Bridgestone did the swap for me) they virtually disappeared.
You could (should) check the tire pressure, which is shown on the placard in the driver's door jamb, but it's probably 32 psi. And it could be dealer prep, if the pressure is way off.

You can get those flat spots in the cold weather, and when your tires warm up they round back out...But its not very cold right now. How do you all get rid of brake dust, will a normal garden hose work or do you need a pressure washer(only 120 bucks for the husky plug in ones, and those work really well on your car IF you know how to use it)?

I actually wax my wheels because they are painted with a clearcoat on top. The wax protects the wheel like it does the cars finish. All I do is take a dry cloth and wipe the dust from time to time, or even just hose it off. It comes off easy. The problem is that it accumulates so quickly.
