tinting

i recently found someone in my area (which is very rural) who does tints at a good price. i know they say you get what you pay for, but at $180 for all the windows i think its worth a shot. he says he uses sunguard tinting ffilm, is anyone familiar with this brand? is it quality? i hear about moleskins and have no freakin idea what that is. i do know that the average people are paying is around 240-. and also, how do they tint the rear 3/4 windows? are there clips that can be easily removed or do i have to worry about whos doing them? if anyone has a diagram that can help i would feel at ease. thanks!

that's a decent price providing u get warranty with that..moleskin is simply felt, that is placed on the windows on the panel. it simply prevent scratches to the tint. this is so because the Tl's door panel and windows are very tight. most tint places with experienced guys can tint the rear small window.. but usallly u pay what u get..

yup, so heres the verdict.. got my windows tinted by the guy, and the tins came out pretty good. he was not able to get the whole 3/4 windows in the rear, but he did go over the 3rd brake light. my problem now is the tint got scratched from a roll down from some possible debris in the door. he gave me a lifetime warranty so im gonna go back, but i want to get those 3/4 rear window tinted fully. i'll take pics, but i dont like the way those windows look when not tinted all the way through. anyone have a guide or diagram on how to safely remove the panel to get the whole window done

He should not have to remove anything to do the 3/4 window. I heard they get in there with a credit card, hard card, etc. to push all the way in. Best tinting did my 3/4 windows perfect. All the way to the very edge and they did not remove anything to reach it.

I hope you went with felt/moleskin, else you'll be experiencing more scratches.

davenlei and I (along with a group of members here in SoCal) had our cars tinted at Best Window Tinting in Irvine for $160. They did an excellent job on everything. Good example on how tinting should be done correctly.

Just do a search and you'll see (or click on the tinting link in my signature).

no moleskin. is this something they apply on top of the tint? im going back to get the 3/4 windows redone, and my passenger window retinted. datmrman: did you get the tint over your 3rd brake light?

Moleskin is felt that they would install on the door/window wiper. They would need to remove the interior door panel to install it.

The third brake light was removed and the entire rear window was tinted if that is your question.

The is a DIY on adding moleskin on here. Just do a search, it was posted by vp911

I did not use the moleskin and have not had any scratches so far. The tint did jam up my nav. That was disappointing...

My front windows got all scratched up; I am having them re-tinted at the dealer right now. I have to say that I have a very good dealership here in Plano to go to they really take care of you. I have had to deal with some real scum ball dealerships in the past. It is a very nice and rare experience to find a good one. Any Way they told me that you just have to make sure to clean the felt out on the door to try and avoid scratches. Apparently Acura did not design the car to have tinted windows.

After tinting my TL the Navi system will drift off track and eventually return to normal. Is this a result of the tint or is there something that could be wrong with the GPS?

If you have a metallic tint then it will throw off your gps signal because of multipathing.

Anyone know anything about Llumar tint?

I hear Tropic in Union, NJ is one of the best places around, but I think they only use that one kind.

i have llumar 35% tint and have had about 5 of my family's vehicles tinted with it. Great durability and i have no complaints about them.

I was in the same jam, the only reputable tint shop in RI uses llumar and i wanted ceramic or non-metallic, but the job wouldn't have been as nice i'm sure. The nav, like someone said, is not as accurate as it should be, but it is only about a matter of 10 feet.

can't you just roll down your window to regain the lost signals?

I didn't think the receivers were inside the car? Why would a tint affect reception?

The GPS antenna is indeed located inside the car. It is located adjacent to the subwoofer under the rear package shelf. It may be that metallic tinting the rear window only will adversely affect signal reception, but I am not sure of that.

When I said "rear window" I was referring to the window over the package shelf, not the windows in the door.

by 'defect' you mean how a metallic tint interfers with the navigation system?

The defect is in the tint, not the car. The tint material should be hard enough to resist scratching, but I have not seen any that are resistant.

Hey everyone,
This is my first post, recently brought an 06 TL. I have the Solar Guard Quantum for 2 months(metallic) without the moleskin. Looking up very close, I have not notice any scratching except for some bad tint job.

Well technically, its a feature not a defect. The TL has very tight window blades (similar to some other high end luxury cars). This locks out air and sound for a tighter seal. The problem is, if you tint your windows, this tighter seal will lend itself to scratching more if dirt gets in there. If you keep it clean it wont scratch. If you use a durable tint, it wont scratch. If you put in the moleskin (a felt lining) it wont scratch.

I have purchased the moleskin, but the directions they included are unclear and in black and white. Can someone post the link with the best DIY on this website. Thanks!

pimpin-tl posted this thread: DIY Moleskin install step-by-step with pics

The link he posted no longer works. You might want to PM him to fix that.

vp911 also had a DIY for moleskin installation, but the last time I checked, the pictures expired.
