Tinting

How much did you guys pay for your tints if you have them, and how much would you recommend for an SSM? I am getting it tinted this weekend and I'm not sure what to go with.

Also, please specify if the percentage is how much light the windows allow in or how much light is blocked. Thanks

the percentage is how much light passes through.

i think limos are 5%

here the state law is 35%... though i dont know what that looks like.

if anyone else posting has a pic of 35% tint, i wouldnt mind seeing it.

Hey I have a SSM with Ebony too, I got 35% all around, looks real nice! As to percentage allowed, In NJ and NY ur not supposed to have anything on the front windowns! But I'm not going to let that stop me, only problem I would really worry about is inspection, and I dont have my first one till 2008, so not worried for a while!

I'm getting my windows tinted and felted this weekend. 35% all around, the charge is $200. I'm getting it done at the Tint Shop on 790 Northern Blvd. I know some other member also got it done at this place, and they were pretty happy with it. I'll report back once its done on Saturday...

here you can get the tint down the the A1 line (i think its called) on your front window, or 5 inches down, whichever distance is longer.

im definitely getting the whole bitch tinted at the legal limit.

anyone know of a good site that shows different types of tints with color/opacity comparisons? ive searched the web and havent found anything really useful.

I'm pretty sure in no case, in no state can you tint your windshield. The only exception I can think of would be the few inches at the top where most manufacturers apply the UV blocking area (whatever that is called).

I find it confusing. But I'm pretty sure Willhaven has it correct. A lot of states now specify the 35% "limit" (at least 65% of the light has to pass through). I wonder where they got that particular number from? Anyone know if safety studies were ever done?

Limo tint is 5%, that's 5% of light getting through and 95% blocked.

So for the state of MD the limit is 35%. That is 35% of the light getting through.

Something to keep in mind for those worried about being legal, Acura puts a slight tint on the windows already so if you then have 35% installed your tint will be block more than 35% and therefore be illegal.

Don't get me wrong, I am not preaching that you should put 50% on. I have 35% on the MDX (on top of the Factory tint) and am putting 25% on the TL this weekend.

Ah, excellent. I thought when I read that the NY limit was somewhere near 30 that I would have some weak ass tints.

I just called a couple shops in CA and got two quotes for the rear windows.

Shop 1 - said that I needed the moleskin/felt before I said anything about it - $120 for the Tint plus $25 for moleskin for each door
Shop 2 - $140 - denied that the 04 TLs need any moleskin/felt. I asked what it would cost to add it anyway, and he said they wouldn't do it because you break the seal and might get rettles or squeeks.

I'll call a couple more shops in the area and see what they say, but what do you guys think of shop 2's assessment?

Many others have reported that if you do not put anything between the window and the hard rubber seal, your tint will get scratched by the hard rubber seal - when you role your windows up and down. The moleskin or felt is placed on the seal to prevent scratching.

I am having tthe shop install moleskin or guarntee it against scratching on the inside, I don't mind paying for it if there is a remote chance it could scratch.

It may not happen to me but it has happened to enough TL owners here to justify the extra step. That is just one man's opinion and there are some that will disagree

We are now doing moleskin on all new Acura TL tint jobs. It's worth spending the time to do it right. Not everybody has problems, but if you have to tint the windows again and have moleskin installed, you just tripled your cost.

Just got my car back from the tint shop. 35% all around, felted also. $200 at The Tint Shop on 790 Northern Blvd for those in NY. Seems like a good place.

However, haven't opened my windows yet (have to wait 2 days) so hopefully the felt does its job and there will be no scratches...=)

Help is on the way...

I prefer lighter tints, I have %50 all around, and I love it! It is my understanding that all levels of tints offer the same level-of-UV-protection.

Here is a simple breakdown of tint shades:

5% = Super Dark
20% =Dark
35% =Medium
50% =Light
70% =Super Light

It may be worth noting, that TL's come with some level of tinting, my guess is about 75% - 80%.... So when you tint your windows, you'll be tinting over windows that are lightly tinted from the factory.

Also, I'm sure you drive at night? Think of it as if you are wearing sunglasses at night, another consideration when selecting tint shades.

Hope this helps,

Mike Smeezy

im thinking of getting a slightly bluish tint on the Anthracite (if they have something that is slightly bluish without being gaudy)

i took a car off cardomain and photoshopped the color of their surroundings off the car and added a slightly bluish tint. i like the way it looks

i havent seen a site that shows their tints ON cars with different percentages.

sucks...

TO GaleForce,

The link above is very useful info. It says the limit of NYS is 70%. If you prefer to see it clearly, you could check the link below for NYS regulations. (PS. Most of ppl tinting 35% or 20% are never getting any tickets here... usually NYS patrols won't ticket you except they're pissed off by your behaviors...)

Here is a link that will let you play with different % of tint on the windows. It also will show what is legal in different states.

http://www.autowindowtinting.com/tintDemo.ihtml

As for the moleskin: If something gets on the inside of the window like dirt or roadgrime, the rubber now on the inside will squeege it off, but it will still be on the squeege. So if you have tint on there it will start scratching it. With moleskin on there it will pull the dirt away from the tint so it won't scratch it when rolling it up or down.

If you never get dirt on the rubber squeege you won't have to worry about scratching your tint. But how many people can say they won't?

That is a good point. I had 20% all around on my old car, and I had trouble backing up at night, when the streets were not well lit or even parallel parking unless I lowered the windows.

I like the way that the 35% looks because its not too dark, it actually looks classy. I'll post pics whenever I get a chance. Personally I don't have a problem of driving at night w/ 35%'s (maybe because I got used to 20%)!

How's it you were able to get the tint for $200. I just called up the place to set up an appointment and they quoted me $229 plus $40 for felt. Seems like the prices went up real quick.

BTW, How are the tints holding up and what kind did you get.

If you want to drive over to jersey, there is a place in edison called tint shop that will do it for 169.99 and no felt is needed. I've had mine for a month, and no scratches or anything. They do a perfect job and you'll save a lot of money....lemme know if you need more info....

they have a new shop near raceway park in englishtown and if you are there to race, you can ask them how much it is. they quoted me 175 for any percent...graphite based tint, lifetime warrenty by them for the rears, since the fronts are illegal

Where do you get your info. I don't know about NJ but it is not illegal to have tint on the front 2 windows in New York. 35% is legal for the fron and you can put whatever you want on the back.

did the tint shop on northern do a good job? how did your tints come out (any bubbles or anything so far)? did they do the back window in 1 piece??
sorry for all the questions! haha

i'm around the queens area on weekends so i may get it done there.
if you can posts pics, that would be great!

1. The Tint shop did a great job. No bubbles. There was actually a bubble on the rear window, that I got pissed over, but the guy (Joe) told me that it was water, and it would dry out. I was a little concerned, but it did dry out. I'll try and post pics soon, its just that the past week it has been raining/thunderstorms, and didn't get a chance to wash the ride...

2. I believe the back is one-piece. Not certain, but I'm 95% sure that it is one-piece. I'll look again to be sure.

3. I know someone asked about how I got it done for $200. One of my friends knows Joe from a while back. That's how I got the discount. I think your price of $229 plus $40 can still be negotiated down though (hopefully). I know that one other person on this site got their tinting done at The Tint Shop for $200 (not sure how they got it done). I would say try negotiating with Joe and tell him that a few people on a-tl.com got it done for $200 (he should lower it).

Check #26 post above, links I provided, "producrdel" said $200 with felts, too. It's the same shop in the auto wash in Great Neck. There is another car shop nearby doing $200 with felts but using "smoke" tint... i don't know what it is...

Follow the link in my signature and you can see what my car looks like with 35% on the front doors and 5% on the back doors and back window. I paid $185 total with felts on all 4 doors.

dope: i actually live in jersey. but i'm sometimes in queens on the weekends, so that's why i figure i'd check out that place in queens.

where in edison are you referring to? i know that area pretty well. maybe i'll check them out. i got my last car tinted for 150, but the same guy who did my last car wants 220 because he wants to install the felt. if the shop in edison can do it w/o problems, then maybe i'll check them out. can you provide me with the info?

thanks!

thanks for the information!
ya, usually when they just finish tinting, you'll notice little bubbles that'll eventually dry out. that's why its good to get it tinted when its warmer out. my last car was done when it was a little colder out so some spots didnt dry as nice.

oh, hmm...maybe i should try calling to see how much it is. haha. if i can get it for 200, then i'd consider it. but 270 is a little too much.

rets
coo,l thanks. i'll be sure to check out the link. this can also be an option since it's not too far from queens. how far off the LIE is the car wash place?
