Tint won't affect Navi

Here's how I came to the conclusion that Tint is not going to affect Navi.

for one, I have 20%/20% tint/mirror and I didn't lose any functionality.

two: the Accord gets navi, but not XM and it has the roof nipple. The TL has the nipple, for XM and for Navi. Why else would the Accord have an external lump if not for XM or Navi.

Therefore the tinting isn't going to block anything.

if you look in the rear window of the previous TL, you see a lump embedded into the top of the rear window, there's your GPS antenna. This year it's all on the Roof.

Also, since the tint goes on the inside, it doesn't block the printed window antenna from external FM signals. The only thing I could think it might do is overdo it if they hit the tint and reflect back and double the signals, as can happen when FM bounces around in city buildings.

The Accord does get XM and that is exactly what the "nipple" on the back of roof is for. Drove a new Accord with XM and no navi with the nipple.

wow.. i was wrong then.. my apologies, I didn't know the Accord got XM. But I can't find any other place the GPS pod could be, I certainly don't see it in the back dash or window anywhere. Unless it's in the pod above the rear view mirror. Integrating it into the already annoying nipple would be best use of the part.

Navi manual page 3 under introduction:

"If you have rear window tinting installed, be aware that if the tint has metallic properties, it can seriously degrade or prevent GPS reception. This is because the GPS antenna is located under the rear window beneath the package tray".

Oops, didn't mean to sound harsh. I just new from experience that Accord had XM and that the XM antenna was the nipple on the back roof.

Actually, I don't think that's right. Here in Canada, we don't get XM radio, but we DO have Nav. And we don't have any nipple on the rear deck of the roof whatsoever, so it's clearly just for the XM radio.

We do, however, have the clitoris! :facelick:

go forth.. and find the clitoris.. lord .. funny

I guess I goofed all the way around on this issue.

Hobster, no harshness taken, i just drew conclusions about what I saw. Glad my tint doesn't harm my nav then.

Same location as on the 2nd generations as well. Tint affecting navi seems to be a mixed bag based on what I've read from members over the last couple of years. Some say they see no difference and some say it does affect the number of satellites the unit can see. I'm sure metallic-based tints are worse.

Probably the the best way to go is metallic on the sides (as its supposed to be better) and non-metallic on the back. I've only heard warnings about the back window. I'm more concerned about them damaging something in the interior while doing the installation so still thinking about it.

I have a 2003 TL Type S w/Navi. The GPS antenna is on the roof above the rear window at the same place the nipple for the XM is on the new models. I don't remember seeing any warnings about tint on the 2003 models and I have dark tint and haven't noticed any problems with my Navi. The new models have the GPS antenna inside the car and therefore the warning about the metallic tints.

Thanks. I was thinking of getting metallic on the sides and non-metallic on the rear as that is the only window that could have a problem, at least according to the manual. Anyone else have a combination of tint materials?

I don't believe that the metalic tints are scratch proof yet. If you want zero problems go for the LLUMAR TITANIUM tint. It will not affect your GPS.
