Timing belt

Hey everyone I brought a 07 tls a year ago with 127000 miles on it. I asked the salesman if the timing belt had been replaced ? Well he said like any good salesmen would that it should have been changed at about 90000. Well I brought the car. So now I have 141000 on it and just learned that the if it does go it's gonna wreck the engine!
Should I worry about it ?
Some belt somewhere squeaks a little when you cold start it.

Some people believe that it's not about miles or age, but about what shows up on the MID. Considering the average timing belt usually needs replacement at about 105K miles, yeah I'd worry about it. You're almost 40k mi above the recommended time to change it, whether it showed up on the MID or not, so yeah I'd probably get it changed and ASAP. You never know when the belt is going to snap, and when it does, it will definitely cost alot more than just replacing the timing belt and the other various parts that also need changing when replacing a timing belt. It's also a possibility that the dealer or previous owner reset the MID to rid of the message, as to why it hasn't popped up since, I don't know.

Have the seller show you the paperwork (with the VIN number on it) from when they had it replaced, otherwise i wouldn't trust it and get it replaced ASAP.

If the original seller was going to sell the vehicle after so many miles, I doubt they did this maintenance as it is relatively expensive to do and then turn around and sell the vehicle. They most likley wouldn't recoup their costs.

Get it changed. Maintenance cost of timing belt replacement < repair cost of damage done by broken timing belt. Also there is the added benefit of peace of mind.

not to thread jack but approximately how much should i expect to pay for a timing belt + water pump job if i bring all the parts to an independent shop?

depending on your location.
HamiltonHonda in NJ offers special deals on timing belt jobs.
WHen I had mine done It was around 400 something.


they have a deal going on now. 389.00, however, give them a call to see what it will cost for an acura. Probably 100 bucks more.

I suggest avoid getting it done at the Acura dealership, unless you like getting bent over and visciously ass raped. Er, I mean, overpaying.

Hamilton Honda did mine for $587 including the tensioner, WP, TB, and drive belt (I bought the idler, drive belt adjuster, thermostat, and TB adjuster and had those installed while it was all apart). I had excellent service by them.

An independent shop can do these, just make sure they have experience with Honda/Acura V6 engines. Assume ~ $300-400 for the labor charge.

I agree with everyone here, spend the money and replace it. As mentioned, it is also a great idea the put in a new water pump. Look at it this way…you’re either ~40K over on mileage, or the replaced belt is half worn out already. I think the last time I did one, I had about $300 in parts…but I tend to use high quality parts.

Even if you're at 141K on the original, it is probably not the end of the world (just yet)

As a point of reference, I changed out my first timing belt on my 1998 Accord V-6 at 140K; I changed the 2nd belt at 340K. In the attached photo the right belt has 200K on it and the left belt is new. You’ll notice the old one definitely looks worn…but frankly I was surprised it didn't look worse…and I drive my vehicles fairly hard. What I did wasn't

wise, but it does show how long a belt can last…

Hansel Acura (they have a thread on here) sells the timing belt kit for less than $400. I think it includes all the parts (timing belt, water pump, tensioner, idler, serpentine belt). That is a good deal. You'll save a couple hundred over list price. Most Honda and Acura dealers will install genuine Honda parts and all you have to pay for is the labor. Just check with them first.

I was just thinking, your spark plugs probably haven't been changed either. That is recommended at the 105K miles as well. You might want to factor that in to your budget.

Just had mine done at Anderson Honda outside Baltimore $489 plus $90 for tensioner. Had my spark plugs replaced, sen. oil change and tires rotated as well. Total was $950 out the door , by far the cheapest I found in the area.

$950 is very good. I just had all that done( timing belt, spark plugs, water pump, etc.) and cost me $1350 at O'Donnell honda in Ellicott city. Norris Acura wanted $1700.

Or, you could spend $179.79 for the AISIN kit. By which all accounts is the same company that makes the Honda OEM kit.

If they aren't genuine Honda parts with Honda part numbers on them and you don't have a receipt for the parts from a Honda dealer, a Honda or Acura dealer will not usually install them.

Fyi, originally the Honda dealer quoted me $775 for timing belt and water pump plus $225 for spark plugs. The $775 didn't include new idler and tensioner which were another $250 that Imwanted done. Add in tax and shop supplies and you get the $1,350.

I was trying to give him an alternative to paying double for the same kit. Now, that may mean Honda/Acura won't install it, but pretty much anywhere can install a timing belt. For less labor cost as a bonus.

Or, the best thing to do is buy the manual and do it yourself. I mean if you can read you can pretty much do anything on a car.


$225 for spark plugs that are $10 a piece at any auto parts store. What do they charge 2hrs labor?

This isn't a very easy DIY. The tech manual says you have to remove the motor mount and jack up the engine.

Fortunately I drive enough business miles each year to cover all my maintenance costs and depreciation of the vehicle. If i didn't I would be a little more concerned about how much it cost.

Just got mine done at Hamilton Honda in NJ; $389 + $125 for Tensioner; $524 out the door before tax. They even gave me a free 2015 Civic loaner over night. If you are close to them, highly recommended. Just a note, they did say that they will charge another $100 over $389 because it's not a Honda car but never apply the extra $100 when I went there. So YMMV.

I recently got a coupon in the mail from our local Honda dealer for Timing Belt and Water pump - 4 cyl -$549 6 cyl -$599. I'm not due for awhile so not sure if they will charge more for an Acura, but it seems like there are "stealership" deals to be had.

I used to work at the local Honda dealer, so I get those discounts + a bit of employee discount still

Maybe that's just timing belt package. Alot of times they couple that with the water pump package and then it can get up there in price.

My mistake, when I was working there I always saw Timing Belt package done with new water pump as well.

Get the Aisin kit from Rockauto.com, part #TKH002, $177.79. Genuine OEM parts from the company that makes them for Honda/Acura. Why pay those insane prices because the Honda label is on the packaging?

Paul, our mechanic in NJ showed me a water pump he recently took out of an '08 he did that had BOTH Honda and Aisin's names on it.

Just like when I needed a clutch, I bought the LUK kit for $164. The company that makes the OEM clutches for Honda.

When my ex-Accord, an '89 SEi needed oxygen sensors, I let my fingiz do the walking across the keyboard and got the original Nippon Denoso's (same exact ones as Honda sells) without the 'H' symbol printed on them for HALF the price that Honda wanted.

Post #20, I already tried. I still can't get over the added cost of the water pump, idler, tensioner , and $225 for $60 in spark plugs.

Only money I've ever spent at the dealer was for parts. The best money I ever spent on anything was the service manual. I never worked on engine until I changed the oil on my first vehicle at 16. Now, I can't count how many 10's of 1000's of dollars I've saved simply by reading a simple manual.

The water pump, idler, and tensioner are very important parts of the job. Just as important as replacing the timing belt itself. The water pump both idlers and the tensioner all comer in the rockauto $180 kit.

Our spark plugs $10ea X 6cyl = $60, labor time 2hrs?

Once the engine was cool enough, it took Paul barely 30 minutes to replace my plugs.
