Throttle Body Replacement - 70k Miles

2004 TL with 70,000 miles.

This is an informational post about a throttle failure. The car just stopped accellerating as I was driving on a local road about 45 mpg. I was told the electronics are designed to automatically put the transmission into 2nd gear to let you get off the road and reduce damage.

Below are the details:

Failure Code: P2135 - TP Sensor Failure
Description: Found Throttle actuator internally failing.
Part: 37850-RCS-A04 Driver Unit
Summary: This was covered under an Acura warranty extension on this part.

Failure Code: None
Description: Throttle body failing
Part: 16400-RCA-A01 Throttle Body
Summary: The throttle body cost $374.41. The labor was $220.00

Yeah wow $220 for TB install is nuts.

Glad everything was covered under warranty...I hope?

That is rediculous. First of all I have never ever hear of a throttle body actually failing since the actual part is metal on metal.... The sensors for sure can go bad but that is crazy.

$220 for the cost of labor is about 2X what I'd expect. Consider yourself lucky that that it's under warranty, a friend with a Mercedes 500E ("The Hammer") had his DBW TB go, $1400 just for the TB.

Two electronic things can fail in them, the sensor or the servo/stepper motor. Never seen a mechanical failure in one before but electrical I've heard of a few failures on different auto brands.

I've seen throttle plate springs fail on really old and junk-yard (only because of heavily rusted steel springs) TBs, but damn, never heard of a TB mechanical failure on an Acura or Honda.

it takes couple hours just to plug in the diagnostics tool into the obd sensor to let you know the code, then you have to walk over to parts and order the parts... sooo much work

Contrary to what you think, a good tech doesn't blindly read a scan tool and replace a part without testing to make sure the part is faulty.

u know id have to say otherwise... the products are made to be read by the programming techniques developed by hondafor a reason....what other proof would u need other than the computer saying its no good? take it out and blow in it? lol

Actually testing the components even if they fail diagnostics is typically operating procedure at most shops. I'm a electrical engineer, and although BIT/FIT (Built-In-Test/Fault-Isolation-Test) is great sometimes it get it wrong. For a TB, the test would be for potentimeter range (if it's a resistive or non-optical unit). Also the stepper motor may have a seperate test for operation. The ECU's firmware is good but certainly not perfect, I've had a few false positives from Honda/Acura ECU's over the years.

bro i totally get what ur saying....and anything is possible. Im also an electrical engineer....but Ive been around mechanics a long time and most of it is take out the part n change it... if it says somethings broken or something seems wrong and maybe it needs a cleaning, ok it'll fly but if its warranty work they get paid no matter what.....just get on it change it and get the car out....these guys pretty much know exactly whats wrong with the car as soon as its on the floor waiting to be worked on anyway....its not like they havent seen it before. Ive also had a few false/positives that leads to other components and thats where u gotta do some HW... nothings perfect. otherwise we'd all be driving lambos. =)

I just looked in the service manual and the trouble shooting steps for that code (WBTW is not "tps sensor failure" <-- sounds easy but in fact " P2135: TP Sensor A/B Voltage Incorrect Correlation ") involve nine pages of troubleshooting. So two hours to diag this issue and replace the TB was a fair price.

Did you ask for goodwill? You could probably calll Acura Corporate, open up a case, and submit your receipts for consideration.
