Synthetic Oil and MID

I plan on switching to Mobil One synthetic oil after my first dealer service. Would the MID computer know that a synthetic oil would now be used? In other words, I'm hearing that the interval can be increased somewhat when synthetic oil is used, and wouldn't want to be dumping good oil that had a lot more life left. Steve

No, the MID hasn't a clue as to what type of oil you're using.

I use Mobil 1 in both of my TLs (mine is an '04 manual and my wife's is an '05 automatic). My driving involves more stop and go and traffic than my wife's does. I could stretch her oil changes out to 6000+ miles if necessary, but I do them at 5000 mile intervals. As for mine, I've been doing 5000 mile changes, but I am going to switch to 4000 mile intervals at my next change because 5000 miles puts me at the end of my MID's reporting percentage and I would rather go for the safer bet.

Nope, the MID is clever, but not that smart. Just go ahead and increase your interval to whatever you think prudent. I use dino oil with 5000 mile intervals regardless of what the MID says. I'm sure you could safely use 7500 mile intervals or maybe more.

Right now my car has 2700 miles and the MID says oil life 60%. So that equates to about 5500 to 6000 miles if I follow the same driving pattern? I don't want to void my warranty so if I start changing oil at about 7500 miles I'm still good both maintenance wise and OK with Acura? I simply want to take good care of my car while not being foolish with premature oil changes. By the way, does the MID tell me when to change the air filter also, or is it based solely on mileage? Thanks.

Oil Change frequency comments

I change my own oil as I have for 40 years. I have heard all the hype on synthetic and how it is good until 450 degrees before it breaks down, Your engine is toast way before that point anyhow. I change my oil and filter at 3000 miles and take it to be recycled. I have always used Valvoline 5-20 in my Acuras. When I look at the oil it is dirty. The synthetic may not break down for many more miles but you are circulating dirty oil for the rest of the time. What I pay for regular oil as compared to synthetic is about half so changing at 3000 vs 6000 or so evens out in price. I have never had an engine problem from an oil related condition ever! I use Mobil 1 filters as well. Just my take on it. A friend has a 06 Corvette Z06 and has had some issues with the synthetic he uses and that is what Chevy insists on......Oh Well!!!!!

You will probably get dozens of differing opinions. Personally, I have been using Mobil 1 and I have 125,000 miles on the car...... oh yeah...... that is with regular oil changes ...... at 10,000 miles weather or not the indicator tells me to change (I drive a 1999 MB C280, had it from new). Never had a lick of engine trouble and it looks clean inside. Just one more opinion.

So do the people running synthetic at 6000-7500 miles reset the MID when it says service overdue(which is @ 5000), or do you just deal with that message until your oil change and then reset?

If you are going to go by miles, and you keep a manual record of this, go ahead and reset the MID so you don't get the message, and then reset it again when you do the actual oil and filter change.

This way, you will be notified of any other maintenance items that may be due.

Ron, I thought I read in the MID reset thread that if I reset it, the computer thinks that all the other reminders have been changed also. Wouldn't that make it so it doesn't notify me again when things other than OCI's are due. Did I misunderstand that thread?
