switching gears

I was driving to work this morning and sometimes I shift into the manual mode and then switch back to automatic. In any case I was in automatic and I was just proceeding from a standstill through an intersection. Being early in the morning and still dreaming I think, I could hear the car seemed to be stuck in a lower gear and not changing, so I just automatically shifted the shift up as though I was in manual mode. The car jumped ito neutral and I came back down to earth and reshifted back to drive. My question is, what if I had pushed the shifter a little harder and had actually thrown it in reverse? I am not sure if the car has a fail safe to protect the transmission in such circumstances.

It's in the owner's manual. When the vehicle speed exceeds 5-6 mph it won't shift into reverse.

Try to stay awake when driving.
