Probably this weekend unless I find that I want brighter orange LEDs. However I do believe the 9 LEDs is the route to go. Here's the video!

http://img531.imageshack.us/my.php?i...0978921ji6.flv

The orange looks like it is increasing in intensity however I think that is just the camera adjusting from the brighter white lights. It did not look like that to me. However I'm now blind due to all the white lights.

Now that I think about it I may have had the camera a little close. I may take another video tomorrow and post it up if it comes out better.

^-- If you want to use the switchbacks to create a set of switch back side markers, then yes there are modifications to do this. Gerzand would be the one to speak to this better as he is trying that direction. You will still have to remove a couple of the boards and the Solid State relay inside the switchback and then cut open your side marker and find a way to install the LED boards and SS Relay you removed from the switchback. You will then have to customer make a different back to the sidemarker or cut additional holes into the back of the OEM one to allow the extra power wires in. Be sure to pay attention to how the SS relay is hooked up as you will need to ensure it is wired up properly for it to work right.

Also sorry for not posting up any progress in a while. I've gotten busy and had to take a break from the LEDs for a while and now I'm scheduled for shoulder surgery again on the 6th so I'll have to get a move on. I have created more boards using 5mm and 3mm round LEDs and so far I like the 3mm ones the better than the 5mm. I just need to get a video taken of them to post up. Infamouslink has gotten some some samples of more powerful LEDs from another source and even found some 5mm and 3mm flat top LEDs. I'm really interested in seeing more of them and believe that they will work better as there is less of a chance of hot spots. The round leds only have about a 30 degree angle of light so it can create hot spots easily. I've found the 3mm aren't as bad about it as the 5mm. However the flat LEDs have closer to a 120 degree angle of light so that would basically eliminate any hot spots. I wish I had an extra side marker to test with.

Close up pictures of switchback board?

Could someone with a set of the switchbacks take some close up pictures of the lights? Specifically I'm looking for some shots of the solid state relay or whatever logic control is on the board. I'm looking to make my own, but I want it to use solid state components and looking into even brighter leds.
6000+ mcd ones
Would probably only use 2 of each color per marker.

Thanks.

Hey everyone... I have been talking via PM's with met152 and after receiving a set of 48led switchbacks from v-leds.com, I am not seeing a SSR like I did in my 30led switchbacks from autolumination. I am taking the car apart this weekend so I will check out whats the deal, and see exactly what is inside the 30led set. Very confused right now

The new LEDs we are looking are in the 6000 mcd range. I put 9 on a single board. It's bright! I'll try to post up video next week. I'm on the way to Oklahoma right now.

Do you remember which manufacturer or model the LEDs are?
I was looking into some power LEDS (100+ mA per LED). These ones put out 15+ lumens per LED. I don't know how they compare to what you're using.

Ok, so here's what I have been thinking. I would like to mass produce these if there is enough of an interest (mods, I hope this is allowed, if I do this I would become sponsor). The design would include a custom, professional produced PCB with all surface mount components. The LEDs would be driven with a constant current driver to ensure max life and not be affected by varying input voltages. I have completed the design work and component selection, next step would just be ordering PCBs and components.

Does this sound like something people would be interested in?
Sorry to step on any toes if Buda or gerzand were already planning this.

AnthraciteAspec is going to be sending his sidemarkers off to me tomorrow for the first set of [dual color, single led] sidemarkers made from these boards:

Each sidemarker will have 10 of these cool little dual diode LED's.

Expect to see pics soon!

Results!

Hey all,

posted some details and pics/videos on my first set of completed sidemarkers on my blinking sidemarkers thread from a while back where I announced my plans to do this.

Go to the most recent post:
https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-2004-2008-93/g-043-blinking-sidemarker-diy-guide-suitable-3g-garage-703668/

InFaMouSLink, the secrets out..... if there ever was any

The hard work was coming up with my own resistance values since I had no specs on the LED's

Have a good one!

Nice just saw the video. looks great. couldn't tell from the video , but when you have the lights on, can you see each individual bulb? i asked cuz i see you added double sided tape to make the lights closer to the front. i have mine all the way to the back so you cant see the output from each light. its just 1 bright white light. another suggestion is not make big that space in the middle between the two boards so you wont have a gap( unless your going for the space) i love the dual diode plcc-2. nice find. where you get them from? i still have everything still on my work desk and everytime i look at them i tell myself ima create another set but i never do. i literally still have over 40 leds of orange AND white.

as to the secret? you the one that always stayed shut until you came out with the product. i never had any secrets. i wasn't even finished with my first set and there were pictures on AZ already. I also heard of some people did some switchback sidemarkers themselves using all the information i did provide even tho it wasn't a DIY.

Either way, this was exactly what i wanted when i first came out with it. A better way than my plan! Those dual diode leds are the shit. Less Work now i just got to get my hands on some.

Hey first off, thanks for the compliments.

And to address your questions:

There aren't any hot spots. They are not butted up flush against the back of the lens, so this is not an issue. They are only about 1/2 way there. Also, this method helps you get much better light output from the sidemarker and this has been done since day 1 of modding sidemarkers (by Kennedy, I believe?)

The spacing of the LED's in the center was intentional for 2 purposes. It makes is easier to solder AND the light is dispersed better to the far edges of the sidemarker. There is no noticeable "gap" in the illumination of the sidemarker.

Again, regarding the "secret" :

I posted where the boards came from a while back. It was no secret. Infact, the past 2 weeks I have done zilch work on this project. It was more of a waiting game on parts. Let me quote myself from this same discussion thread Post#101:

"I ordered a pair of 48-LED switchbacks from V-Leds to create each switchback sidemarker. I am using 2 of the longer printed circuit boards (containing 6 white and 6 amber LEDs total) from each bulb. This will essentially be a disassembly\desoldering of the switchback bulb and harvesting of LEDs as well as another board found inside the light."

I just dont wanna give people the impression that im some prickly ass who doesnt want to share ideas. Thats the opposite of my duty here on the forums. I just dont give things up till im sure they will work...and i wasnt. As you can see, the SSR idea went out the window.

No problem tho, just thought id share my

And thanks for your contributions too.

I think it could work and would be cost dependent. The more reasonable the cost, the more you would sell of course.

Guys, this thread is really impressive. I can really see the thought and hard work to figuring all this out, I admire you guys!

Hey guys, sorry I haven't been posting up lately. Had shoulder surgery and am just now feeling better. I pulled off one of my side markers yesterday and started working on mounting up a board. I took some pics and glue is setting right now on the side marker. I'll take a video and post up that and the pics a little later as soon as the glue is set enough. I went with the PLCC-2 LEDs on my install.

Met152, if you are looking at mass producing I'd say go for it. This is InfamousLinks thread though so I'd check with him too.

For those that want one sooner, In my testing I ordered enough stuff to make 4 extra sets using PLCC-2 LEDs from oznium (9 of each color per side). I have 2 guys in my neck of the woods wanting a set. If they still want them that leaves 2 sets that I would have available once finished. However I'm on the same level as Gerzand, these are to time consuming so I probably won't be to keen on making more that what I already have parts for.

Got one side ready to install. All resistors and diodes are contained within the sidemarker assembly. The Relay is attached to the new back panel.

Here is the link to the video:
