Sunroof Explodes

I'm heading to work this morning when I hear this loud shattering of glass. I pull the sunshade back and glass falls into the cabin. I stop and look and I have a huge hole in the sunroof with a spiderweb shatter pattern throughout the whole sunroof.

I was out in the country driving and am absolutely sure that nothing hit the roof. In fact the glass is pushed upward as if under pressure from below. I can only assume that the sunroof may have been torqued awkwardly when closed previously.

I did call the dealer a few minutes ago and they said they never heard of it but to bring it in and they will get me some wheels and take care of it.

Maybe it was Neo entering the Matrix....... Just happened to land on your car.

How lucky, you should put the broken pieces on eBay. "Glass Fragments From Neo's Entry To Matrix. AUTHENTIC!"

Steve

PS: Sorry to hear about that.

Falling space junk, a bullet someone fired miles away, a bolt falling off an aircraft, I have a hard time buying a stress break like that, it would just quietly crack.

if you can see where the point of impact was you can tell if it came from above or not

Over a year ago, I was in the service dept at Acura of Serramonte (Nor Cal) and someone pulled in with a similar exploding sunroof issue. The guy said that he was driving on the Hwy and it just exploded....

This is so wierd. I cant wait for the pics. Look around, feel very gently and see if there's a point. If its on bottom or top, meaning to make sure nothing did really hit it from the outside and then with the pressure from inside it didnt just pop out.( did i make sense>?) lol

This is exactly what happened to me. It looks like it shattered outward. The dealer fed me some BS about the cabin pressure making it exploed like that. They said a rock must have hit it. I can't see how a rock can do that at a mere 45 mph.

I think he meant wheels as in a loaner car to use while they check it out

Oh ... you mean they don't automatically give you a new set of wheels when your sunroof explodes? Well that sucks.

Here is a pic (hope it shows up). The dealer was very cool about it. They said they had never seen this on a TL but did have it happen on a RL. They said it looked the same as the RL showing the glass blowing up from inside and not being struck.

The dealer is having the glass overnighted and will fix tomorrow(no charge) and provided a new 06 TL to use.

The dealer stated that its their impression that this is a result of increased cabin pressure and defected sunroof glass. They are taking pictures to forward to Acura.

WOW. Thanks for the picture, Shark. There certainly wasn't an external source for that break.

Shark,

Glad they are taking care of it without too too much hassle. Still baffled how something like this gets past QA at these places.

Man...it hailed literally golf ball sized hail on my TL last week TWICE....most cars around here got pelted with dents....not the TL...was out in the whole thing (not driving...but outside in it) and not one dent or broken window. There were people with softball sized holes right through their back windows (south of me...not right in my area).....so I guess I got lucky!

You must of been flying in your TL cause only an increase of cabin pressure can cause something like that.......j/k. Glad to see that the dealers will replace it for you.

My father-in-law's MDX had a very similar thing happen to his passenger side rear window a year or so ago. I hope this doesn't become a common issue with Honda glass!!!

I had a 04 Max that had a recall for the same type of problem I think. My sunroof never shattered, but I got the recall notice after I sold the car. I never heard of this happening with a TL, but I don't think you'd have anything to worry about, I'm sure it would be covered under warranty.
