Sudden change in transmission and high throttle!

I was driving my car in auto mode and suddenly the engine throttle went high! The throttle dial also displayed a "1" on it, I guessed the transmission suddenly went to 1st gear ! Though that day i drove the car for around 170 miles (with >10 stops and in 8 hours say!).

Is it an indication to some intrinsic transmission issue or something else?

If you had it in auto mode then it really shouldn't have gone into 1st unless you were slowing down to a stop.

If you had it in manual mode and it dropped to 1st then I'd say you bumped it one too many times. But from what I know the transmission is smart enough not to do anything that will cause damage to itself in a case like that.

So you're saying you had it in "D" and it suddenly went to "1"?

Yes i was driving in "D" as in the gearbox. The high throttle case suddenly happened. we were driving in highway, i probably did bit slow down the car!

The case what happened was high throttle and engine roaring. The "1" was displayed on the throttle meter, i guessed it representing 1st gear due to the high throttle as i mentioned, may be something else too (like some code)!

So it went into 1st gear at highway speed? Did you notice if you pegged your tachometer too?

The M indicator only lights up when you switch to SportShift. The ECU prevents the transmission from shifting into a gear that will cause damage.

Your story doesn't add up.

Then your transmission is the least of your worries.

sorry, there is no way the tachometer went to 9-10k.

First off it's an automatic which means the ecu will not let you overrev even if you tried.

Second, the TL tachometer ends at 8k...so how can your tachometer read over 9k?

is there a possibility that you moved the shifter into sports mode on accident?
causing the RPMs to jump and displaying a 1 on the dash to represent 1st gear?

The ECU will not let you downshift into a gear that could potentially cause any damage. This doesn't make sense, I think you'll be fine.

Idk about you guise but I can't even downshift into 1st if I'm still rolling. It will only let me drop to 2nd and then when I floor it (and I'm going slow enough) it will downshift into 1st by itself.

Im not saying that this is the case, but there are plenty of stories on this forum marking the beginning of the end of a transmissions life when something like this happens. The gist of mine is I was driving on the highway leaving a toll booth, car decelerated hard, revs jump, I put it into manual mode to see I am in second gear. I pull over, relax, and get back on my way. this happened once more to me that day on the way back home, then my tranny died in my driveway later that day.

04-06's don't allow you to. I believe 07-08 transmissions allowed you to downshift as long as the transmission deemed it ok.

I don't think i have shifted the gear because I was on highway and it was highly likely that i will even take my hand near to the gearbox.

But as Sutitan pointed out can it be marking of the END of transmission? this happened only once and it has been 2 weeks now after this, it didn't recur yet.

Are you sure it was 1 and not L?

No I am not very sure. But it mostly looked like digital 1 on the tachometer. I had to stop my car quickly and switch off the engine. later it didn't recur.
