hrmm... my friend says, theifs will also torch a car to do the owner a "favor" so the insurance comapny can't claim that it's fixable anymore... i hope your insurance is working for this! kind of messed up, but at least you don't have to live with a violated vehicle...

As much as this situation royaly sucks, it would be worse if they stripped it, and insurance cut you a check for only 2/3 of the parts.

Hope everything gets taken care of, and it sucks to see this happen to a fellow enthusiast

1 word - Towed. Your car can be stolen right in front of your face without knowing. These theifs got tow trucks and just tow cars away. I was driving around near tremont in the bronx one night at 3am and i see this tow truck pulling along a new 7-series. Yup, 99% probabilty it was stolen.

Isn't it true that if a car has OnStar it's the same as a lo-jack? I wish you could get the TL with OnStar.

On Star is actually better than Lo Jack. With onstar, not only can they track your car, they can remotely kill the engine. If the operator was in a bad mood, they can lock the thief in the car too. (They can remotely lock/unlock the doors).

As for the theft itself... On of my friends has their TL-S stolen from their driveway too. Neighbors said they saw a towtruck come by, and take it. The thing that confuses me, is that the neighbors saw this going on, but nobody called the cops....

Onstar while useful for some but isn't for most. It is $16 a month!! that is almost $200 a year. Like clearly it is ocassionally useful but most people don't need that much. I think it is a better investment if you will be parking in sketchy places 2 get a really good security system.

Sorry about the car. I had a car stolen almost exactly one year ago, also from my house on LI. It's a pain in the ass. Did they catch the dirtbags? I hope so, not that anything will happen to them anyway.

People who take other peoples stuff need to get the crap kicked out of them.

Sorry about car, hope ins will fully reimburse it.

On a side note – I am really concern about those tow steals.
I’ve seen how fast tow could pick it up.
Personally, just for a little more peace of my mind, (almost like using club)
I put my car front first and turning wheels all the way left or right and use
parking brake– to make towing it as much “tow unfriendly” as possible.

I know they could steal it anyway, but I think some of the bastards would
rather look for car parked with a straightened wheels.

You know, we have some young people in here, some not even old enough to drive...don't you think it would've been prudent to have posted a warning before showing such graphic pics?

But seriously, sorry for your loss, man...I'm not sure what would be worse, having my car stolen, or getting it back like that. As many have said, be glad for insurance. Good luck with everything.

God that is fugly, what they did to you. I agree with the poster above that since they torched it, you now don't have to worry about misgivings in taking your stripped but reparable car back.

We need that security system from that movie Robocop. The thief gets in and gets electrocuted. When the owner gets there, he removes the body and drives away. They didn't mention anything about being liable for the stink though.

My car is alarmed AND it's parked in the garage of my house which is also alarmed (ADT) but, I have no illusion that if a thief wanted it they'll find a way to get it despite that.

....so hard to have/keep something nice without someone wanting to steal and/or damage it.

There's no guaranteed way to prevent tow theft. At best maybe a tight parallel park might deter it but ...... a good alarm and Lojack is probably the best way to go.

I hear you on that one. However, in our litigious society the owner of such a car would a) probably be charged with manslaughter (or attampted manslaughter) , b) be sued by the family of the thief and c) be victimized by a justice system where it's now implied that the victim is aparty to the crime committed against them (i.e.: ...shouldnt have bought a car nice enough to warrant a security system that produces an electrical charge to prevent its theft).

Or shouldn't have bought a car that would make a person want to steal it...by buying the nice car, you are guilty of entrapment...it's all your fault...

Maybe this will generate an idea for future TL's (and others) -- with technology today (and satellite connections in our cars), maybe cars should have a moving camera that is always on when you lock the car (assuming you're leaving it somewhere) and transmits pics to a computer/police station -- may help with crime...and catch those creeps who did that to your car!!

That truly sucks. Hopefully they dont have those radio and navi codes. I find those pretty useless since it doesnt benefit you unless they know that they need codes and avoid your car. Mercedes Benz have some tow lock thing, there is a button on the dash that needs to be pushed for the car to be towed(I think it just disarms an alarm, but It may do more, I am not sure).

Thankfully we live in the safest city in the country(literally) so I am not too worried about car theft. There have been a few broken car windows, but as way of cars go, nothing more. The worst theft was some guys stealing furniture with a truck while a family was on vacation, neighbors called the cops. Hope insurance straitens this out, best of luck.
