"Special" Add ons to paint job?

I just purchased a RX330 from the local Lexus Dealer and let them charge me $400 to "simonize" my car, which I had never heard of, but a friend and my father in law knew about it so I went ahead with it.

First: is that worth it or a total rip off? Does it actually make the car easier to clean / keep clean, and / or make the paint last longer and look better?

Second: Does Acura offer a similar service on the new TL?

You were ripped off. This sort of individual dealer add-on is purely for dealer profit. Individual Acura dealers probably offer something similar, but you can do the same thing yourself for a lot less money.

So it does essentially nothing for the car?

These dealer add-ons are just profit centers, and some of these things can actually harm your car. The concept is that they believe that you will sell or trade the car before coming in to complain or try to make good on some guarantee.

Do you know WHAT they put on your car? What is it supposed to do that a good wax job for a fraction of the cost would do? If you need some paint or bodywork down the road, some unknown paint coating can cause serious problems.

FOLKS! - Just say NO to Paint treatments, interior treatments and undercoatings! The cars don't need them, and you can do better and cheaper on your own.

I made the mistake of paying for this on my '99 TL. It was a total rip-off.

I went back to the dealer and made them give me a refund. They did such a crappy job of putting the stuff on the car (missed spots etc.)

It was just some kind of polish, similar to Zaino but not half as good. It didn't harm anything, in fact I don't think the stuff lasted for more than a month before it was washed off...

You could make a decent living waxing *new* cars for $400 a pop.
