Subwoofer distortion

Guys: Just another "Is this just happening on my TL/is this normal?" question:

I am getting MAJOR distortion from the sub. For example, on the DVD demo disc, the Missy Elliot track (21 I think?), if I set the sub level to a bit more than 1/2, and set the volume to 1/2, the thumping sounds BAD.

If I try to isolate as much as I can to the sub (i.e., to the rear fully), you can really hear it. And it's NOT from the the rear deck speakers (or any of the other speakers). All the other speakers can hold on all the way up to Volume 40 without any distortion (even with the Bass and Trebel maxed out). And this is NOT a rear deck vibration issue - it is not moving.

Please tell me this is not normal, and I just have a bad speaker that can swapped out by the dealer??

THANKS!!!!

Hold up... There is a Missy Elliot track on the demo disk????? I dont have any DVD-A disks yet but I have a lot of cd's with lots of bass on them, I dont get much distortion from the sub. I never turn sup up more than 3/4. Is the distortion coming from the sub or the rear deck? Your issue may be with the stuff around the sub rather than the sub itself.

Yes, just look on the back of the case. Track 21, I think.

Anyway, it is NOT from rear deck vibration - this is a speaker issue.

PLEASE - SOMEONE - any distortion from your subs??

THANKS!!

None from mine. Have the dealer look at it.

I had the same thing happen on my TL from day one. When I took it back to the dealer to fix a different issue, I had them note the sub-woofer vibration from the back seat. (I told them they could test it with track 16 on the demo disk). When I picked up the car my service manager told me they found the problem to be in the rear deck. They had to take out the back seats and used a foam tape between the seats and the deck to stop the vibration. I have had my subwoofer up to 90-100% (and regular bass too) and have absolutely no distortion (and I've pushed it to the limits with the pretty bass intensive songs).

Perhaps you can tell your service rep the same the next time you go in for service?

Now I'm confused. When you guys talked about the rear deck foam fix in other threads, I thought that was because the rear deck physically vibrated.

I think I have a different issue. When the sound out of the sub is all distorted, I do not detect any undue vibration of the rear deck (at least by my hand on the deck).

I just have crappy sound. Are you saying that this is CAUSED by the rear deck (without a detectable vibration)???

I don't have any distortion either even at max level and 40 volume. You'd better take it in.

I had the same issue coming from sub ,the dealer said the sub was hitting the speaker gaurd ,so they but a spacer or some kind of tape to give space ,no more distortion sound.

Did anyone played Madonna's "American Life" cd by any chance? It sounds just awfull in my new 04 TL. I enjoyed this CD alot in my old 01 CL-S and now I'm wondering what is exactly wrong, is it the way the CD mixed or there's something wrong with my TL? All the DVD-A i've tried sound just about right, no distortion of any kind, but this one CD is troubling me.
