Whats goin on, met up with my buddy who ownes a 98 540i and he wanted a piece, both AT. Started at 10mph and pulled him 3 car lengths to 1oomph. felt good to hear that v-tec roar.
Needless to say my buddy wants a rematch.:p

if im not mistaken it kicks in at around 5000 rpm or more....yep got to love that ROAR VRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMM...

0-60 on a 540 6 speed is probably about the same if not faster than the TL. M's will eat TL's for breakfast but then that extra $30K in our wallets are probably slowing us down.

The engine changed 9/98, but got extra torque and no increase in horsepower, IIRC. What would that tell us about a change in the RPM at which peak horsepower was made?

In any event, the 540i is a fine car and certainly a good value and alternative to a new TL as a CPO car. I nearly bought one myself, but chose FWD for the snow. If I lived in warmer climates, I probably would not have gotten the TL.

The TL is also a fine car. Ripping a 540i doesn't make it any better.

I'm on the bmw boards right now telling VTEC haters why they should respect Honda heritage and racing pedigree.

Why the Honda-BMW war? It brings us all down.

1997 540 manual ran 1/4 mile in 14.0 at 101mph. Never seen TL doing this. My 2002 540ia with a sport package (shorter final drive) consistently outran my 02 TL-S. My 540 with no mods runs 1/4 mile in 14.3, TL-S ran 14.8. Current TL is should be somewhat fatser than 02 TL-S but manual vs manual or auto vs auto BMW still should win. BTW VTEC roar is nothing compared to V8 sound in 540. Above 110mph it would be all over for an auto TL.

I love the new TL but I do have to admit, that racing / driving wise, the 540i, 1999 in my case, is no compare. That thing just throws you in the seat and keeps pulling hard way into the 1xx mph. The launch on it is also a lot better because its RWD and the tires lock up a lot faster. I dont know about the 1998, but I think you should run him again and see if you get simular results.

 

Then it's too bad you can't reach 110+ MPH in 1/4 mi!
