something so stupid that i didn't realize
so I got my car on the 2nd of Nov and have been driving it for over a month.....with the MID at trip and thought I was getting crappy gas mileage. I remember reading someone elses thread about how they drove for 5 miles at such and such speed and recorded how many miles per galloon they were getting, so i thought that at every 5 miles, it resetted it self to current situation, but then..I held onto the select button or whatever it is...and it resetted and realized that the mpg thing changes when you reset it...hahaha....i felt so dumb, because I didn't know...for a whole month, I was thinking..."damn, I'm getting horrible gas mileage..I hope by 3,000 miles it'll get better or something.." anyways, that was my something so stupid that I didn't realize...

I reset it every time I fill gas (suspect most people do the same) so I can see how the MPG changes each time. There is a dramatic change in the MPG figure after a freeway trip!

However, I hope our owner manual could say more and explain more about our cars. It ain't thick enough...
I wanna read more about our damn cars...

The MID is constantly, meaning always, adjusting the miles per gallon figure based on current driving conditions, vehicle speed, etc. When you reset it, it starts at zero, but in a few miles it will average itself out and display the current mpg, and will continue to do so as you drive.
As an example, if you have been driving in the city for 200 miles, your mpg might read about 17-18mpg, but someone who has been driving on the highway for the same 200 miles might have an mpg reading of 30-32mpg.
This doesn't mean that, after driving in the city for 200 miles, you can go out on the highway and it will immediately change the mpg reading to 30-32. It will factor in all previous driving conditions for this tank of gas, and your mpg will slowly but steadily improve, but will never get up to 30-32mpg because the MID is using current conditions to adjust the actual mpg.
If you are driving down the road with about a half tank of gas, and the MID says you are getting 30mpg, resetting the MID will show a lower figure for a few miles until the MID analyzes current conditions and adjusts itself, and if nothing else has changed the new reading will again be the same 30-32mpg you had before you reset it, because resetting the MID has nothing to do with fuel consumption.

what does this mean i never resetted my MID and it says i get 15 mpg im always on city driving. What does this mean for me do I really get that low mpg's? or is this like in the BMW m3 when the meter adjusts depending on your current speed?

I've noticed that the higher my average speed on the MID, the better the gas mileage. This TL gets terrible mileage around the city(35mph avg), but I'll usually get 27mpg at highway speeds(65mph avg). I reset the MID when I'm driving on the highway to check mileage, but usually leave it alone when I'm driving in the city just to check my average speed and gas mileage. I've never owned a car that had such a huge difference between city and highway driving. My other car only varies between 32-39mpg between highway and local driving...it's a Honda DelSol btw, and the best mileage I've ever gotten was 42mpg on a long trip at 60mph. The best I've gotten was 29mpg in the TL on a long trip.

My 93 DelSol Si 5MT only gets about 22-30 the way I drive. Never has done much better than that. My TL 5AT which still has less than 2K miles has a best tank sofar of 27MPG. The worst I've seen is about 17MPG in the city. I don't think this is bad for a new engine that I've been doing a lot of playing with. I'll trade the difference in space and comfort any day.
Our MDX only gets 13-15 in town. It does get about 23-24 on the highway. Is there a trend here?
