So Much For The Mole Skin

Well I installed the mole skin before ever even rolling down my windows....i've had my windows tinted for about a month now and last night noticed scratches in my tint already. I'm sure glad i put that anti scratch mole skin on.

was the moleskin applied properly? there are 2 'blades'. do you keep the gaskets clean? moleskin or not, if you've got rocks in there its gonna scratch.

I'm pretty sure I installed the mole skin correctly as it's not a difficult project. I'm not saying it caused the scratches, but it definitely didn't prevent them. I've only rolled them down 1-2 dozens times, cause it's still winter here, so with that being said and the install being so new, I'm confident that there isn't any debris that got caught in the moleskin. The scratches are not long vertical ones, but just little 1/4" skid marks in about 3 different locations.

^ same thing happened to me when i installed it. i bought my car in aug 06, tint installed 1 week later, moleskin installed 1 week later, never put the window down until 3 day after moleskin install, i noticed scratched tint. you might have done what i did and cut the strips in half. im going to get my tint redone and then im going to install the moleskin as one full strip rather than cutting.

Yes, I did gut the strips in half and installed a strip on each of the 2 blades. Is that not a good idea?

Most -- if not all -- of the tint shops in my area come with a 100% lifetime warranty. I'm guessing that yours do, too. In this case, take your cars back and have them re-tint (for free) and tell them what's up. They should know how to rectify the problem permanently.

yea i think thats the problem. i did the same thing. i have shaky hands and i dont think i was able to cut the strips as easily as i would have wanted to. but i applied it anyways because i had no more left. the problem was that the instructions said that cutting it in half would be the best method but thats obviously not the case for some people.

I need to correct my self and apologize. So, I've been thinking that my tint is scratched cause of these marks on the inside that would not wipe off. Well it's been warming up here and when I was driving home yesterday I took my finger and rubbed on a newer larger mark and it smudged, which made me happy. When I got home I got some paper towel and Windex and worked all the marks off the tint! All along I thought they were rub marks/scratches. I swore they were....before, when I first notice them, I was rubbing and rubbing trying to buff them out (using just my finger) and used my finger nailed and it seemed just like a scratch. Come to find out it's the glue from the mole skin. I don't know if it was so stubborn because the cold weather stiffened up the glue? I still need to take the door panel off and check out the mole skin strips. I'm guessing I'll have to reinstall the mole skin on the driver’s door.

Sorry for jumping to conclusions, but I was convinced that they were scratches.

good to hear. I installed moleskin myself on my rear door windows, and this had me wondering if I did it for nothing. BTW, never use windex on tinted windows.

Am I okay with just using Windex that one time?

I also cut the strips in half and I even did a how-to on this. I haven't had a problem with mine yet and my tint is fine. I had to fix the two front windows (my fault) after a rain storm, I had the window down for a second in a drivethru and it got the moleskin wet where it came up in two spots. It's fine now though.

Did it last June.

You can use window cleaner on your tint. Just make sure it does not have Amonia (however you spell that).

Its the small things that keep us happy. Even though this isn't that small of a thing.

Good work.

Hi, I was curious.
Are you guys having any problems with the moleskin?
I read a few threads about wind issues; they are hearing wind through the window after they install the moleskin.

You will hear wind while driving if you actually remove the piece that the moleskin is applied to.
When my dealer replaced my door panel they forgot to put that piece back in. The wind noise was noticable, so I went back. They left the wiper piece on my old door panel, which was still sitting in their shop
