Smart Key

Anyone know how these systems work. Can you alter any car to use a smart card system like the new RL and some other luxury cars?

We seemed to discuss this before. I have to search. But there is one link handy here... http://www.honda.co.jp/auto-lineup/i...ent/index.html

When you carry your smart key, in the certain range, your car will sense your approach, anybody touching the particular spot of the car (like door handle or trunk rim) will make the door/trunk unlock.

The ignition is like the switch or button there. As long as your smart key matches the system, the switch or hit the button could start/turn off the engine.

Maybe I'm wrong...

Man, I have considered the same thing since I got my 04TL. If 05TL comes with this and rear-view camera, I'll ask the dealer if they could add them on.

I guess add-on/installation of Smart Key system is harder than camera.

We can do the camera mod, don't nee dealer. All we need is the little nub MDX camera for a clean install above the license plate. It is pllug and paly w/ avelectronics. Cost money, but extremely doable especially if we can get that camera or teh Lexus RX one

the smart card aftermarket is probably doable but i think the cost would outweight the advantage. i admit i really want this feature in the car and would have paid for it if it was an option. i don't think there is a large market of people looking to retrofit it anyways so its highly unlikely to have a kit for the 04 TL.

Probably more of an innovative "ooh ah" cool thing more than anything else

I'd be happy to just get the keyless buttons on the keyhead itself instead of carrying a separate fob on my keyring. Hopefully, there'll be an aftermarket offering for that.

This could easily become an aftermarket item. It is not difficult to do - it is similar to the RFID technology used to spoil shoplifters at the door. The car sends out a small RF signal - the user's device "hears" it and sends back a coded signal. The car identifies it and unlocks the car.

The only problem I see with this as an add on is that you will still need the ignition switch to turn on the accessories and start the engine.

SO - until it is built into the car, it would probably only be a gadget for opening the doors as you approach, and you can do this with your fob, since you need it anyway.
