side view mirrors rusting

My passenger side mirror started to have a blemish in the centre and slowly grew into what could only be called a rust spot about 1/2". I took it in and got it replaced under warranty. Now I see rust on my drivers mirror near the bottom on the left side. Could it be something I'm doing to cause this? How many out there have experienced this problem.

wow I didnt think this was covered under warranty. I have it only on my passenger side, its the same color as the lettering so I wasnt sure if it was rust or what. My all my letters are rusted? Im talking about the "objects in mirror are closer.. " I dont have it on my drivers side mirror.

There are a couple more threads here on AZ- one in the past month, and another from last year- about the spots/blemishes/rust-like discoloration of the outside mirrors. Those with the problem had their mirrors replaced under warranty without any questions. One or two posters thought there might have been a connection between the defrost wires behind the mirrors and the discoloration.

G/L.

Yeah, the discoloration is caused by the heated mirrors that Will Y. has stated. Try not using them as often with your new sidemirrors.

Same problem here, happened while at the dealership for an unrelated warranty repair. I noticed it while I was going down the road after picking up the car. I thought it was mud since I didn't have them wash my car. Back she goes for more warranty work. Geez.

I had my passenger side mirror replaced under warranty for this. They said the "rust" spot was caused by a short and resulted in "burning" behind the glass.

interesting that it seems to affect members from southern states that may not get the cold use.Especially if 04Komodo has not experienced this. Living in I strangely use my heated mirrors minimally because I'm used to scraping the ice off, maybe there is a trend with southerners using them to defog but it's not cold enough and the lack of timer causes them to burn out. Details from each member with the problem would be nice.

I'm in Wisconsin and use them sparingly in the winter when there is frost or ice on them. Why there isn't a timer on these things is amazing. Guess I'll have them fix the mirror when I go in for the p/s line recall in may.

If I want to keep them on 24/7 they shouldn't be rusting I have had other cars and they never rusted over 7 years. It's just a lousy system

Funny I just had both driver and passenger mirrors replaced last week. I thought it was mud around the edges until I realized you couldn't wipe it off. Got them both replaced under warranty. The dealer refers to it as "delamination" under warranty description. I use my heated mirrors pretty heavy over here in Pittsburgh as it snows 6 months out of the year. Since I am close to being out of warranty, I will have to manage "time on" better. The dealer has seen a bit of this though on Acuras out here. Took me 3 yrs to screw them up. Somone left there mirrors on in Cali by accident a while back and the mirrors started smoking. He got it replaced under warranty though.
