Should I feel down shifts on a Type S Automatic?
Guys,
Just wanted to put a quick question out there. I just recently switched from a 2006 TL to a 2007 TL-S both in automatic. The one difference I do feel is when I am slowing down from speeds you can feel the car down shifting through the gears. Is this normal for TL-S owners?
I know that the TL-S auto has a more aggressive shifting program, but it almost feels like when I used to drive manual and down shift through the gears as I approached a light. I did not feel anything like this in the 06 base TL. BTW, both have about 45k miles.
Let me know your thoughts.

It's a good thing, ensures the vehicle is in the correct gear in case you need to speed up quickly instead of waiting for the slow computer to decide to down shift when you slam the accelerator.

Sometimes, driving my Type S feels like a untamed stallion, which is a good thing. If you are driving in Sports Mode, be sure to not down shift manually. Just let the car do it's own downshifting,
I would like to know this too. Because im thinkong of a DIY atf change or just take it too the dealer for the last maimtenance that will be free for me.
Since they are not a lot of threads on the type-s i would like to get a good answer.
Which one will be better, just let them do it in the dealer or a DIY??

The only thing that sucks about this is that you pretty much can't coast to get better MPG. I do that all the time in my Chrysler 300m and I think partially due to that difference is why I get overall 3mpg better than the TL-S.
I had really harsh downshifts...took it to the dealer and they said their was software update for it and reprogrammed it under warranty. Fixed it for me...I barely feel any downshifts and the car is smooth as can be when slowing.
This thread talked about the software update also, read post #35.

Yup, just like I said
The downshifting is normal. I don't know if I'm just used to it, but I rarely ever feel it or even notice it unless I glance down at the tach and see the needle jump when it downshifts.
Amazing how people still refuse to search the other thousand threads on this subject.
It's normal to downshift as you're slowing, it will be more pronounced going downhill and if it's too harsh it's the switches and/or on the TL-S, programming of the rev-matched downshifts.
