Self Service Oil Changes

I was thinking about starting to change my own oil in my TL and was wondering when I do if I need to reset the oil life meter or does it reset itself? If it doesnt how do I. Also is anyone else changing their own oil in their 04 and is there something I need to be aware of before I get into it?

Thanks!

It's pretty easy, and IMO, fun to do.

Check out this thread for some pointers.

You have to reset it yourself - there are several threads, debates etc. about what to do when doing your own oil. Been doing it on every car I own. Cheaper, gets done right, no loss of car, no dirty guy in my car, the parts I want are put on (or in) etc.

Be warned, the stock filter on the car (if this is the first change) is very, very small in diameter. I could not find a filter wrench to fit it - so what I did I wrapped electrical tape around the edge and that was enough for my wrench to grab. Other than that is easy to do. Some debate about the ring around the oil plug needing to be changed each oil change. I have never done this - to each his own. If it were cracked or broken I would change, but each oil change IMO is overkill.

Long live the DIYer!!

Plus, the oil life meter in MID should be reset by youself... just hold it for ten seconds...

Here’s the full procedure to reset the MID:

1. Turn the ignition switch to ON

2. Press the < or > button repeatedly until the oil life is displayed.

3. Press and hold the Select/Reset button for 10 seconds. The Multi-Information Display will ask for a confirmation.

a. If you are sure you want to reset the display, press the Select/Reset button for 10 seconds again.

b. If you do not want to reset the display, press the < or > button to select “Cancel”
