Scratched Tint Replaced, and Felt Applied Inside Window...NOW A NEW PROBLEM!

So, my tint guy de-did the tint but used the felt strip that was recommended on an earlier thread. The problem I'm facing now is that it rained this weekend and now the window is making a squeaking noise as it is being rolled up and down.

Anybody else experiencing this? Anybody have any idea what the heck I'm supposed to do next? This is ridiculous. Seven Acuras I have owned, and this is the first one I've had this problem with.

After the rainy day, does this noise still last?

Thanks.

Have you treated the exterior with Rain-X or something like it to smooth it? I thought the felt was in the interior, same side as the tint so it doesn't scratch it. If that's the case I wouldn't think weather would be a factor as far as the felt goes.

I know. Thats what I think as well. But my car has been out in the rain for the last 24 hours (we were in Santa Barbara for the weekend), so maybe the moisture inside the door is the key factor. The windows did not squeak until they got wet, and actually its only the driver's window that is making noise.

Except someone experiences the same thing, it's puzzling to figure out. Do you know how they installed tint windows for you? Did they remove the whole frame or just enlarge the gap to insert felts for you? I just wonder if this technic would hurt... but why other three are ok?...

acuraddict like I said in the PM, I will talk to my tint guy about this to see if he has any info.

Maybe when you where driving in the rain some water got kicked up onto your window, in that water might have been a small rock or something. Now that rock is lodged inside the door somewhere and is rubbing against the window. Can you see any type of scratches in the window? Does it happen when rolling the window up and down?

Also have you found any type of advertising flyers in your windows when coming back to your car? I have had that same problem happen to me on my 99TL. When the dealer took the door panel off they found some of the small 5x8 advertising flyer cards that they stuck on my window when I was out clubbin. They slipped down inside of the door causing the window to be misaligned.

Well, the tint guy sprayed some WD40 into the corners of the window opening at the front and rear of the door while the windows were down, and the squeaking is almost entirely gone. I think it may actually be an Acura problem, not a window tint problem. The other three doors are fine...so maybe its the worm motor in the door. ????

I'll keep you updated.

Well, the felt strip had gotten wet when I rolled down my window during the rain. I had pulled into a gas station, and rolled it down. The tint guy pulled it off and replaced it, and the noise is gone (he didn't have to do that). I guess the bottom line is that if the felt gets wet, it can make noise. ? O.K.....

But you don't have problems in other three windows? 'Cause you don't roll them down during the rain?

Does that mean that felt is not good? Or it will dry out soon even though you do nothing after a few days?

Does this mean this will happen every time it rains if you open your window?

Kind of tough for drive-thrus, toll booths, etc...?

Hey acuraddict:

Slightly unrelated, I thought it was illegal in California to tint the driver and passenger side windows, or am I completely off my rocker?

No, you're still on your rocker but your swinging way too far back in that chair. It is illegal, but Cops are very unlikely to hassle you with 35% - 50% tint. Its when you start abusing the privilege and go with 25% and down as low as limo type tint all around that you're looking for trouble.

Some people use a lighter tint on the front doors to make it look like they are being compliant, but cops are not that stupid; they've seen it all before. Plus, the lighter tint up front, IMO, looks worse than no tint at all. It works on an SUV or minivan, but not on a car.

5 years ago, my firend in LA said it's better to keep driver side window without tint 'cause Police pulling you over would use a gun to target you if they cannot see you...

So, he has tinted windows, execept the front windshield and driver side... I laughed at him... I guess it's ok to have partial tint in CA....

I asked my tinter (Black Diamond in Santa Clarita - does all the dealers) about the felt. They said that the felt would not make any difference regarding scratches - if there was dirt in the inside gap, the results would be the same - felt or not, and the felt might even make it worse.

Also - Although it is illegal to tint the front windows -
1. Don't drive like a jerk and you won't get stopped,
2. If you do - roll down both front windows immediately. It will also make the cops more confortable.

RE: Tinting in CA

Well, it's not really illegal to tint your windows in CA.
It's just illegal to permanently tint them. (ie Dipping).

So, if a cop wants to be a d!ck, they give you a fix-it ticket, and you have to demonstrate that your tint is not permanent. How do you do that - well, you have to remove it.
Then you just have to go through the hastle of removing the tint and having it re-done.

Either way, if you p!ss off the cop, then it's just another thing they can write you up for (like no front license plate).

Acuraddict is right, if you don't abuse it with 15% limo-tint, they really don't care.

However, the reality is that if you do get pulled over, be nice to them.
1. Roll down your windows.
2. Turn on your inside lights.
3. Sit in your seat, with your hands visible (on the wheel).
Just so long as they can see that you're not about to shoot them, then they get less jumpy, and you get a better chance to talk your way out of it.

Yeah, I've been pulled over a few times. Yes, I've gotten tickets some of the time. But I've never gotten a ticket for tinting or license plate - just for going too fast.

phile, I sent you a pm, but just to cover it here on the thread, please tell us how your tint guy avoids the scratches. What is his secret, or his method that works so well?

Thanks

BTW, one week and no scratches so far with the felt strips in place.
