Rustproofing?

Hi guys,

I'm in Montreal where there's snow for about 5 months in the year. My car is brand new. Should I get it rustproofed? What do you all think about this? Thanks!

What kind of Rustproofing package would you like to get or would your dealer try to sell to you?

The only product I've heard of that works is some sort of a spray-on that goes in the wheel wells to keep the rust from starting there. There are also chemical treetments that can be done to the underbody, but I doubt they work. Perhaps someone else knows more about them and could give better advice.

Its not the snow that gets you, but rather salt on the road. When I went to Michigan Tech in the UP (about as far north as you can get in the states) they got so much snow that they didn't use salt ... only sand. If thats the case where you are, I'm not sure any product can help.

I did have a Camero that had the rustproofing done in the wheel wells, and it looked like a good product. I don't know where you would get it done though.

From what I've heard, most rustproofing is just a way for you to spend money. Acura, and most other car makers warranty their vehicles against rust. My dealer told me I'd be wasting my money getting extra rustproofing done. The best way to prevent rust, IMHO, is to keep it clean during the winter. That doesn't mean making the car spotless, just cleaning the salt and road debris from the wheelwells and under the car weekly, or after driving on a salted road. What I do is just go to a self-service car wash, and spray under the car and wheelwells to remove the crud...I don't actually wash the whole car...it's too cold in the winter for that nonsense. Keeping the underside clean should be all that's required even in Montreal.

Thanks guys.

I don't think I'm going to do it. It is guaranteed for 5 years anyway. I was wondering... I bought the extended warranty up to 7 years, do you think the rust proofing is extended also? Probably not eh?

I just Zaino'ed my car yesterday, gave her two coats, so the paint is nicely protected for winter. I'll just keep doing that and washing the underside.

Thanks again for the replies guys.

zax123, I also use Zaino, and the stuff is great but I did notice a big improvement after putting on the 3rd coat...so far I've got 6 on the flat surfaces, and 5 on the sides. I noticed a huge improvement in shine and depth after the second coat and continued to apply more coats over the last 3 months when I had the time. I wasn't that impressed after the first coat, but now everyone notices the difference...including my girlfriend who hardly ever notices stuff like that. Keep the underside clean and you should be just fine. Good luck this winter.

JetJock,

Out of curiosity, what color is your car? Mine is Anthracite so the Zaino doesn't have as huge an effect as when I Zaino'ed my black Prelude. But the finish is incredible. So smooth. Water just washes right off. I'll keep the two coats I've done for winter, and I'll put two more on in the spring...
