Question Rough starts????

I've recently picked up my 04TL and noticed that when starting sometimes, it will start up rough where it wants to stall out and then pick right up and idle fine....does anyone else have this problem?....

Just want some insight before it take it back to the dealer.

I had the same thing, they changed out all of the fuel injectors (which cost Acura about $3,000), but that didn't help, in fact it got worse.

difficult starting

Mine has taken longer than normal to start several times. I was going to wait until it became more consistent before I took it in.

Fuel tank

How full is your gas tank? I.e. does it happen only when you're close to empty?

The manual states sometimes the car will fail to start at all on the first try due to the engine trying to keep emmisions in check. Perhaps the same thing is happening here, where the engine starts out rough to keep emmissions low.

I'm just guessing. I've maybe had one or two rough starts, and perhaps that many no starts in 3 months of driving.

it happens quite a bit...once in a while it will start rough, its stalled out on a start twice so far. The fuel tank was usually above the half mark. I spoke to my dealer 3days after i picked it up and he said thier demo car also starts rough, if it keeps happening to bring it in. He's a good friend of mine so i kno he'll take care of me....but again, just want some insight before hand!

Thanks for the replies guys!

mgokool - I'm getting mine looked at Wednesday of this week relative to this "starting" problem. I'll let you know what they find out.

Re: Rough starts????

This is another link ppl here ever talked about this topic.

Car not starting first time...

However, in my car, sometimes I do have fast/better start if I directly skip the waiting period of adjusting the fuel pump.

it's normal, just wait until the fuel pump is finished and crank it until it catches

I hope it's not normal for a car to do this as none of my other makes have ever had this problem of starting. Unless you're saying that this is normal for Acura/Honda. I'll admit as I'm unfamiliar with Acura/Honda products and this is my very first one. However, even the guy above had his injectors replaced by Acura as they thought something was amiss.

I'm not overly concerned as it's only happened to me two or three times; however, that's two or three times more than any of my other cars combined. I've even tried the turn the key "ON" and then wait and then start the car and it did it again.

This is something that I would have just written off as minor until I read about a few people on here having the same problem.

I'm sure the service department won't be able to "duplicate the problem" and just dismiss me as being crazy.

Unfortunately, my stupid dealer told me this in November, "this is normal" (could I say it's normal for Honda/Acura? My 94 Legend sometimes is just like this...)

They even don't waste time to replicate it.

I have encountered the same issue 2-3 times in the last 2 months. It's actually a little embarrasing to have my brand new high-tech car sound like it can't even turn over! It certainly isn't a sign of progress.

I hope we find a fix/adjustment for it.

i was told by my service manager that acura has stated that this is normal. acura is claiming that anything up to a 15 second start is normal behavior.

Better to ask the question "how many other ultra-low-emission vehicles do any of you know which starts like this..." or "how many $30k-$35k cars do you know with a ULEV rating?"

The starting isn't a function of the price or level of quality of the car, it is a function of the ULEV (ultra low emission vehicle) rating of the automobile. The ULEV rating was definitely part of the reason I chose the TL. It is a real testament to the engineering group that they could get so much HP and still have such (relatively) low emissions.

read the manual it tells you that starting up your car it will sometimes start and not start or like hesitates DUE TO THEM TRYING TO IMPROVE ON EMMISSIONS thats what the manual says.

Pick up my TL yesterday, experience the same problem here, having rough starts. The rough start sound is just not very conforting. I had a 98 Accord that is ULEV rating and it doesn't start like this.

During delivery, I've told my sale person to put that on writing to bring in to look at. I am hoping this will go away after the break in. I'm gonna see if I notice any more other issue before I bring the car in to do a big check up.

Yep, I read that too, hard to create emissions when the car won't start.

I've had problems starting my car occasionally too. I usually just wait a few more seconds and this time crank it longer until it catches. If you guys hear anything let me know.

Ugh, I know what you mean! I'm a "victim" of the rough starts as well. It probably happens 3 times a week. The other day I was in a busy mall parking lot and a couple of guys were like "Sweet car man!" I casually said thanks, and talked with them for a couple of minutes, and then sure enough, I try to start the friggin thing and it won't turn over! Man, I bet I looked like a tool :o

I've had the same issue a few times, but the past few days it's gotten much worse. I would say it has had trouble starting 50% of the time over the past few days. It's been raining here, first real rain since I got the car, so that may have something to do with it.

Personally I don't care much, but will this harm the engine over time?

I agree!

It's just embarassing when people are checking out and complimenting you on this beautiful piece of machinery, and when you go to start it, that smile just turned into a shameful grin.

I've driven my friends 04 accord and neither him or myself experienced this problem. Weird in my book!

If I were you, I would still take your car in. It shouldn't take your new TL 8-10 seconds to finally start after turning over to no avail for the first 7-9 seconds. Mine did it again this morning and I even did the "turn the car key "ON" and leave it on for a few seconds and then turn it to "START" trick". It just sat there and turned over and over and over and over and over and then fired up.

Something is definitely amiss with some of our cars. One dealer replaced a guy's fuel injectors and it made the problem worse.

I get mine checked out on tomorrow but I know what they'll say, "Sorry, we were unable to replicate the problem during our testing."

This maybe a stupid question, but what type gas are you guys running? I see that alot of post are from CA. Don`t they do somthing strang to their gas? Has anyone just try changing their type of gas their using or maybe a bottle of octane boost?
I don`t think this problem is uniquie to just this Generation of Acura.

Just My .02 cents.

93 octane for me...or whatever the best grade available is at the gas station I roll in to.

I don't know if this will help or not but my '98 accord ex is doing the same thing. Its been doing it for a while now. It usually only happens on a warm start. Off a cold start, the RPMs jump high enough to keep the engine going. Although on a warm start, the RPMs are low and it stalls out. I end up having to hit the gas a bit when starting to keep it from stalling.

Thanks for the info. Who knows why some of our TL's are doing this....mine has done it cold and warm.

I don't think it has anything to do with the grade of gas we are using though. Probably more something to do with the ULEV and some type of sensor which might need modification. From the sounds of it on this board, quite a few TL owners might be effected; however, not many seem to take notice since it does it intermittently and not to such an extreme degree.

As expected, Acura Service Tech called me today and told me they could not replicate the problem and that they don't think anything is wrong with the car. He did state that some people were having problems with the TL's computer recognizing the chip in the key (immobilizer chip) and that could cause the delay. His advice was to put the key in the ignition and not start the car for a second or two and then turn it over.

So, the saga continues...

I agree....but they will figure it out eventually. I have faith in them.

My whole point is, even if the tech does duplicate the problem while starting it, what the hell is that going to do? It's not like he's going to be able to just tell by listening what's wrong with the car.

Sooner or later, there will be more and more of us complaining about this issue and we will have a resolution. Until then, I just hope nothing "bad" happens to my TL when it's firing and firing and firing and not starting.
