Question RL sharkfin

One of my next mods is to replace the XM antenna with the RL antenna. I think ours looks rather uninspired. I really like the looks of the RL's antenna, it has that "sharkfin " look of a BMW.

I tried to price it through my dealer. I only want the plastic outer shell, but the smallest sub-assembly includes other components and was about $180. Does anyone know if I can get just the plastic " sharkfin " outer case.

Also, which RL silver ( i think there's 3 of them ) would be closest to the TL's SSM.

Thanks....

That's interesting... I look at the BMW's and think how much I like that mine is very modest and NOT like a shark fin. I do agree that your TL would stand out a little more.

viks ref is for the RL, here is the ref for the TL, which is $113.01. Only two colors are the same: desert mist metallic and nighthawk black pearl, so the other colors might not match the original.

Also, the RL says it is Antenna telematic, and the TL says antenna XM, so there may be a difference there also.

Funny. My buddy just emailed me today saying something like "What's up with that stupid looking dorsel fin on the new BMWs and Audis". I agree that it looks ridiculous. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

I read somewhere that the sharkfin on the RL is for Onstar. I think it was in the brochure or the Acura site.

I think they are all one piece, and the base would be a different size for each. The only way you could do it, I think, is if you replaced the entire assembly, but it looks like the RL is narrower and the base might be a different shape so it wouldn't fit properly on the roof. It could probably be mounted but it might need a little filling and painting. Only way to know for sure is to actually try one and see how it fits.

I thought the TL was sweet for having a more mild antenna, the fin is indeed a bit intrusive and obnoxious looking, kinda like cars today that still have FM antennas that protrude from the car. The glass mount ones are so nice, car is cleaner.

The top shark fin looks like a water ski fin, I much prefer our flatter one as well.

I'm sure i could modify the RL cover to fit over the " guts " of what under our plastic cover. The problem being is I can't just buy the cover.

Well, I'll keep looking and maybe check out some other manufactures "sharkfin " covers to see if they are available or wait a little longer till an RL shows up in a salvage yard.

You need to find somewhere with a totaled RL that didn't become "lightly rolled"...

There are high end "scrap yards" for lack of a better term that might be able to hook you up. I have been calling around looking for a few TL parts for some tinkering I want to do...

Just a thought... If you want that fin back enough, you'll find it out there somewhere.

I too am looking for a RL fin. In Hawaii there is no XM. And no news of it being here anytime soon anyways. Seen tooo many SSM look alikes and just want it to be a little different.

According to this article

http://www.boston.com/cars/autoshow/...es/07_fin.html

"The fin on the new Acura RL sedan is strictly for OnStar. The carmaker conceals the XM satellite radio antenna within the cover for the center high-mount stop lamp."
