Question rewiring the headlights...

ok.... so i rewired my headlights so my parking lights dont come on. it looks badass with just the middle headlight. the turn signals still work though. my inner fog lights still work when switched on but i think it looks bad with the middle headlights and inner foglights with no parking lights.

SO HERES MY QUESTION.... how do i wire it up so the parking lights will come on when the inner fog lights are switched on?

has anyone done this? are there previous threads out there u can direct me to? can anyone help me? im definatly not the best when it comes to electrical wiring so speaking in laymens terms would best sweet!

ill get some pics up here this week of what it looks like now with just the middle headlight for those who have never seen it. it definatly adds character!

Isn't there a rule about starting a thread that requires pics...you know, basically saying to wait to post until you have the pics (especially when the title says there are pics)?

Not a bad idea, afterall, you need amber lights in the front end of the car, but the sidemarkers could fulfill that requirement. Johnny, how did you do it? just cut one of the wires?

For the passenger side, there are three wires.

Black, White, Red. Cut the red wire and tape up the ends. To do this remove the plastic insulation from the wire harness going to the bulb and cut the wire a couple inches away from the bulb. This is just in case you want to reconnect the wire. Then tape up, put the insulation back on, and tape up a little more.

One Down, One To Go!

Drivers Side, Three more wires, a bit more tricky...

Red, Red, and Black. Cut the red wire on the END of the harness, and repeat above procedure.

Check that the wires cut are the proper ones before putting everything back together.

Enjoy!

I've done the turning off the parking lights mod and it looks good. I also cut the wires, but after thinking about it, cutting the wires isn't really necessary. You could just use 7440 bulbs instead of 7443 bulbs. I haven't tried this, but it should work.

nope. Just turn the wheel to the right for the drivers side, pull back the inner fender liner, and have at it. Do the opposite for the passenger side.

Is this mod to turn off the parking lights OR to turn them on when fog lights are on?

It does. when I first blacked out my headlights, they were the only ones I could find in Amber glass--which is what I wanted. I drove around for a couple weeks with no parking lights. I actually like the embedded amber glass against the painted black housing, instead of the dim, glazy looking "clear" amber bulbs. I ended up ordering a pack of 10 Amber 7443's from a wholesaler though, in attempts to stay as close to legal as my tastes would allow.

If you want amber 7440 bulbs to disable your parking lights without cutting any wires, you can just got to an Acura/Honda dealer and get rear turn signal bulbs for an '04 MDX.

there is also another way of doing this

take a peice of black tape, and place it on the bottom of the bulb, on the contact which is for the parking lights. did this on my 00 Si, had it there for 3 years and no a single issue

It is really quite simple to get the parking lights in the front to go on with the fog lights since the positive side of the fog lights are switched (not the ground wire).

Now my disclaimer, I do not condone the turning off of the amber parking lights, they are there for safety reasons, but if you must ……..

Simply tap off the 12V + feed to the fog light (per the 2004 svc manual, the blue/yellow wire to the fog light) and run the wire to the cut wire that leads to the bulb socket on the parking light (you can probably tap both bulbs off one fog so you only need to tap into one fog light, use an insulation displacement connector so you do not have to cut the fog light wire, only the insulation is sliced).

The fogs are protected by a 20 Amp fuse, so the wire you use should be at least 14AWG, or better yet, use an inline fuse holder and a 1.5A or 2A fuse (1A fuse if connecting only one parking light per fog light) to protect the wire you are using and the fog light wires / relay / controls, etc.

When you switch on the fogs, the parking lights will be powered and come on, just like you wanted! The low load of the parking lights should (but no promises) not cause an issue with the fog light wiring. (if it were the turn signals, that would be a different issue, as they are higher amps).

(keep the other cut end of the wire from the harness to the parking light well insulated and never connect to the fog light wires).
