Replacing 5AT Transmission

A few weeks ago, I had the seal replaced between the torque convertor and the transmission because it was leaking...I have a little over 10,000 miles on the car. When I got my car back (2.5 days later) the leak was gone but 2 weeks later it started leaking again. Now they're going to replace the transmission next week. I hope this fixes the problem.

Wow, replacing the transmission entirely is a fairly drastic measure for a simple thing as the transmission. Do you know if they're replacing it with a new one or a refurb?

I forgot, when they replaced the seal they also replaced the torque convertor so next thing to replace is the tranny

I just called them to verify new or refurbished, it will be a refurbished tranny. Does anyone know how good a refurbished transmission is?

Tell them you want a new one. If you would have bought the car used I can see getting a refurb but not a new car. You might get one of the recalled honda trannys in there.

5at

Well, I voiced my concerns to the service manager at Tim Smith Acura about having an 8 month old car and getting a refurbished transmission, he said he also would be concerned, but he assured me the transmission and torque convertor that will come from Acura is just as good as new...I hope he's right.

i'd call ACC... and complain... refurb would not be acceptable on a fairly new car, esp if it was leakin from the beginning

Acura does not open the transmissions up. They always just have them swapped out. And they are always replaced with refurb units, not new.

Get use to it. This is the way Acura/Honda has worked for years on all the CL and TL cars.

They already have refurbished tranny's at the factory?? wow, they must have already gone thru the "accepted" number/percentage of tranny failures this year.

That was exactly my thought -- they already have refurbished transmissions? They either have had several fail, or the ones that failed and were caught in the factory have been reworked. But those don't need to be marked as refurbished - I thought refurbished means it has to have been sold on the market and then returned to vendor, even if the "box" was never opened.

Refurbished can mean anything from repaired and resold or someone opening a box and returning it.

It would be a lot cheaper for Acura to redesign it instead of replacing a ton of new trannys. My bet is its redesigned.

my bet is its the same tranny but modified to prevent the failure. a complete redesign will cost alot in R&D. even tho there might be possibility of failures the modification would reduce or prevent most of them. the cost to replace any failed trannies would be much less than a redesign. i would like to think it was a redeisgned tranny to save some face for acura but this is a business and its all about numbers at the end.

It's too early to tell if this is a "one-off" or a bigger problem. I'm giving Honda/Acura some credit from what they learned in the Gen 2 debacle and that they're smart enough not to find themselves in the same situation again. Every manufacturer has some failures in all major drivetrain components.

Hey man I would beg, bitch and complain about that deal. I understand that this is the way acura does business but I would bring up the point you didnt pay 35k for a car with a refurbed tranny. They need to be throwing you a few bones. I would make them throw in at least a 100k warranty on it unless you already have the extended. If they refuse call ACS. There is always a way to get something down right. If you dont care then no worries I guess. I would not take it though.

Second gear popping out randomly while driving. Sometime it would grind when going in to gear too. Bad syncros, but had to replace whole tranny becuase it messed everything else up. Been in the the shop for 2 weeks now, hope I get it back tomarrow.
